It's way back in history at this point, but back in the early 70s, Merle Haggard was in the Toby Keith/not quite Ted Nugent category -- Okie from Muskogee was a nasty piss on the counter-culture, and seemed to mark Haggard as a close-minded redneck. He's of course long since disowned much of it, and become a widely beloved performer. (And the left doesn't generally hold a grudge as long as the right, who still work up a frothing rage at the sight of Jane Fonda.)
