Get it to a wider audience by creating a product that would be despised by true Sondheim fans? I'll wait until the project actually screens, but I'm not going to hold my breath and I won't be looking forward to it until I hear and see some previews.

I recently saw the Sweeney Todd concert (with George Hearn and Patti LuPone) on DVD and I have to say I can definitely see why Tim Burton was tapped to be the director of the film version.Big Magilla wrote:I'm sure she would be fine, but why would Hathaway, who is well on her way to becoming a huge star, want to take a supporting role in what appears to be a disaster in the making?
I don't know why but I, for one, am optimistic about this project. I've recently turned into a huge Sondheim fan. If anything else Burton, Depp and company would get Sondheim's music to a wider audience (hopefully).

What do you guys think of possibly having Anne Hathaway as Johanna?

It's a Tim Burton film...of course Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are the leads...we should have expected (and many have suggested it). Burton really needs to get over himself.

Let's dispense with all the rumors. They seem more and more ludicrous every day. I hope not one iota of any of them are true. Bring Angela Lansbury out of mothballs and give her a shot at Mrs. Lovett and if she does it, then I'll gladly put her up for that long overdue Oscar.
However, Burton's an idiot for casting so I don't expect any logical choice.

The more I read here about odd choices for roles( Depp, for heaven's sake), the less interested I am in seeing this film version of a musical that is intelligently written, even exciting. I guess those of who have seen Sweeney Todd onstage( thank God I never saw Patti Lupone in it) will have to remember the show, not the film. The musical deserves the very best treatment.
