I'm baffled by how such an average film as Lady Bird is winning all this awards for best picture

I’m happy to see Cynthia Nixon show up somewhere, if only in third place. The performance of the year, in my opinion.

I think in my mostly positive take on ‘Get Out’ last spring, I described Kaluuya as deserving of Best Actor consideration but having no chance. At the very least, that’s how I’ve thought of him. I couldn’t be happier for his reception.

There were some close winners. One vote separated Lady Bird from Get Out for Screenplay and Director, and two votes for Picture.

Tee, what are you going to see today?

A friend has talked me into going out to the movies (anyone on the East coast knows why I had to be talked into it, since it's a balmy 12 degrees outside).

Anyway, since they're going SOOOO SLOOOOW, I'm not going to be here to post the last few winners. I'll update my post whenever I get back (possibly after a dinner and some healing Irish whiskey), but if anyone else wants to post winners as they come in, feel free.

My interim take: we blame the TV awards for taking the juice out of the acting races, but this year the top critics have done the dirty deed in the supporting races. With a nice variety of supporting actor choices, they've decided Willem Dafoe is running unopposed (I'm as baffled by this as I was two weeks ago). And, in what seemed a strong two-woman match-up for supporting actress, they've lined up decisively behind Laurie Metcalf. We're in the hopelessly ironic position of rooting for the TV awards to inject some suspense into the races.

As for best actor: the Kaluuya choice reeks of "we're tied of Chalamet winning everything/let's boost someone else's chances" (I'm not denigrating Kaluuya, but no one last March spoke of him as a best actor possibility). In the process, they've split Oldman's opposition, and probably helped him the most.

Boo! I hedged and changed my Kaluuya prediction to Chalamet. In retrospect, Chalamet doesn't quite feel like a juggernaut-ing candidate.

Also, starting to wonder if I made a mistake changing my prediction of 'The Shape of Water' to 'Call Me By Your Name,' which I did because for the past two years this group has mimicked LAFCAA.
