Most surprising omission to me: Aaron Tveit for featured actor in a musical (Next to Normal).
I'm a little surprised by the lack of showing for 9 to 5, but not a lot. The movie was stale crap in 1980 with only Dolly Parton's title tune to recommend it. I can't imagine it has aged very well, though I did expect to see Megan Hility in Parton's role nominated over Stockard Channing who is 20-30 years older than the part calls for in the universally dissed revival of Pal Joey. Martha Plimpton was the only one who was singled out by the critics for that show.
As for Lansbury's competition, Hallie Foote, Horton's daughter is also a sentimental favortie for her father's last play.
Hallie has had a long and distinguished career on stage and TV. Her best TV role was probably in her father's 1918 (1985) with Matthew Broderick. She also guest starred in two episodes of Lansbury's Murder, She Wrote.

I guess the most surprising snub in Best Actress in a Play is probably Carla Gugino in Desire Under the Elms, who looked like a possible winner. I wasn't too surprised about Kristin Scott Thomas (although I also thought she would be nominated) since her production closed so long ago, and since the category had so many whose shows were still running, but Gugino was a surprise.
Lots of other performers were snubbed who could've won in a weaker (aka normal) season, which just hows how strong the season was for plays. (Brian Dennehy and Elizabeth Ashley come to mind.) Meanwhile badly reviewed productions like Pal Joey and Guys and Dolls get nominated just to fill out the category.
I know I had declared him the winner several weeks ago, but I'm wondering about Rush now. His show got left out of the Revival category, and its only nominations other than his were the rote nominations you'd expect for this type of production--sets, costumes. I wonder if his show may be a bit too out there for the voters, and if they'll go another direction when they pick a winner. Despite the Best Play nomination (a weaker field than Revival), I can't imagine them liking reasons to be pretty much more than Exit the King. And Raul Esparza's show seems pretty much forgotten by this point. He's overdue, and this is his third consecutive nomination, but I don't see it this year. I didn't think Lansbury was going to be nominated when I read Leading Actress, then I saw her in Featured...but looking at her competition (not a name I recognize), she may very well be a shoo-in for a record-tying fifth Tony award (to be shared with Julie Harris). But, this is only her 6th nomination, so she won't take that record away from Harris.

I'd say this analogy somewhat overstates the critical love for Billy Elliott and underrates the enthusiasm on the positive side for Normal. Maybe La Cage aux Folles/Sunday in the Park with George?
Maybe. Maybe they'll split best musical (Billy Elliot) and best score (Next to Normal).
I'd expect these two shows to sweep the acting awards with Billy Elliot winning for best actor (the three kids) and featured actress (Haydn Gwynne) and Next to Normal winning for best actress (Alice Ripley) and featured actor (either J. Robert Spencer or Aaron Tveit).

I was actually going to reference that Lion King victory at the Drama Critics as something to watch as precedent this year. If Billy Elliott has enough baseline critical support to win that prize despite those who think Normal is a bloody masterpiece, it will probably waltz to the Tony.
I've never seen The Lion King, so I have no personal opinion on the outcome that year. But certainly both it and Ragtime were wildly acclaimed.
Also, don't go looking to the precursors for help this year. Next to Normal's earlier incarnation off-Broadway had it already competing for the Outer Critics and Drama Desk in prior years. Producers argued it was a substantially changed show and should be reconsidered. The powers that be said, okay, but you have to give us free tickets -- which the producers of Normal failed to do in time before the deadline. So, the show is ineligible for anything but the Drama Critics and Tonys.
