Most surprising omission to me: Aaron Tveit for featured actor in a musical (Next to Normal).

I'm a little surprised by the lack of showing for 9 to 5, but not a lot. The movie was stale crap in 1980 with only Dolly Parton's title tune to recommend it. I can't imagine it has aged very well, though I did expect to see Megan Hility in Parton's role nominated over Stockard Channing who is 20-30 years older than the part calls for in the universally dissed revival of Pal Joey. Martha Plimpton was the only one who was singled out by the critics for that show.

As for Lansbury's competition, Hallie Foote, Horton's daughter is also a sentimental favortie for her father's last play.

Hallie has had a long and distinguished career on stage and TV. Her best TV role was probably in her father's 1918 (1985) with Matthew Broderick. She also guest starred in two episodes of Lansbury's Murder, She Wrote.

This from some moron at E!

Katie Holmes was robbed. So was Daniel Radcliffe (and the object of his equine affection). Frank Langella and John Lithgow were similarly snubbed, as were Nathan Lane and Kristin Scott Thomas. And, alas, Jeremy Piven was not representing.

But while the Mercury Man was MIA, the Rocket Man was BMOC at this morning's Tony Award nominations.

Billy Elliot, the stage adaptation of the Oscar-nominated film, scored by Elton John, bounced away with a leading 15 nods.

John competes in the Best Original Score category, going up against fellow musical legend Dolly Parton for 9 to 5. Billy Elliot will vie with Next to Normal, Rock of Ages and fellow film adaptee Shrek the Musical for the Best Musical prize.

Among the other name-brand stars nominated: Jeff Daniels, James Gandolfini, Raúl Esparza, Geoffrey Rush, Allison Janney, Stockard Channing, Angela Lansbury, Martha Plimpton, former American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis, Marcia Gay Harden, Hope Davis and Jane Fonda.

Up for Best Musical Revival are Hair, the bilingual production of West Side Story, Guys and Dolls and Pal Joey. God of Carnage, Dividing the Estate, 33 Variations and Reasons to Be Pretty will compete for Best Play.

Former West Wingers Janney and Channing will compete against each other as Leading Actress in a Musical, for 9 to 5 and Pal Joey, respectively.

Davis, Fonda and Harden, meanwhile, compete for Leading Actress in a Play—Davis and Harden for their roles in God of Carnage and Fonda for 33 Variations.

Daniels, Esparza, Gandolfini and Rush stack the deck for Leading Actor in a Play, with Daniels and Gandolfini up for God of Carnage, Esparza for Speed-the-Plow (aka the play that Piven left), and Rush for Exit the King.

In the Featured Actress in a Play category, Blithe Spirit's Lansbury competes against Shaun of the Dead and former Spaced star Jessica Hynes, nominated for The Norman Conquests.

Plimpton is up for Featured Actress in a Musical for her part in Pal Joey.

Meanwhile, Leading Actor in a Musical is a slightly longer list than usual this year, thanks to the triple nomination—albeit as one entity—for the stars of Billy Elliot. David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish, the three boys who rotate the title role, are all nominated. They compete against Idol's Maroulis, who is up for Rock of Ages.

The 63rd Annual Tony Awards will be handed out June 7 in New York. The complete list of nominees is available at TonyAwards.com.

I guess the most surprising snub in Best Actress in a Play is probably Carla Gugino in Desire Under the Elms, who looked like a possible winner. I wasn't too surprised about Kristin Scott Thomas (although I also thought she would be nominated) since her production closed so long ago, and since the category had so many whose shows were still running, but Gugino was a surprise.

Lots of other performers were snubbed who could've won in a weaker (aka normal) season, which just hows how strong the season was for plays. (Brian Dennehy and Elizabeth Ashley come to mind.) Meanwhile badly reviewed productions like Pal Joey and Guys and Dolls get nominated just to fill out the category.

I know I had declared him the winner several weeks ago, but I'm wondering about Rush now. His show got left out of the Revival category, and its only nominations other than his were the rote nominations you'd expect for this type of production--sets, costumes. I wonder if his show may be a bit too out there for the voters, and if they'll go another direction when they pick a winner. Despite the Best Play nomination (a weaker field than Revival), I can't imagine them liking reasons to be pretty much more than Exit the King. And Raul Esparza's show seems pretty much forgotten by this point. He's overdue, and this is his third consecutive nomination, but I don't see it this year. So if there's a surprise, it would be Gandolfini or Daniels. Both are highly regarded actors, although Gandolfini is obviously more well-known; I'm not sure who got the better reviews of the two.

The American Idol guy got in because they wanted to avoid nominating a convicted sex offender (James Barbour) is a bomb of a show (A Tale of Two Cities). Wish they would've gone with the West Side Story guy though, just to keep the Idol contestant out of the running.

Well, several "huh"'s just from a quick glance. Kristen Scott Thomas continues her year of wildly-acclaimed/then-award-ignored. John Glover -- not nearly so praised as John Goodman, or Lane/Irwin -- gets the only acting nod for Godot.

Jane Fonda looks to benefit from two split-ballot entries. I'd guess McTeer would be her strongest competition.

And, if anyone missed it, Billy Elliott won the Drama Critics' prize yesterday -- making it, on the Lion King precedent, the most likely best musical Tony winner. (Best play went to Pulitzer winner Ruined, continuing a venerable tradition of best play of the season ineligible for Tonys)

I didn't think Lansbury was going to be nominated when I read Leading Actress, then I saw her in Featured...but looking at her competition (not a name I recognize), she may very well be a shoo-in for a record-tying fifth Tony award (to be shared with Julie Harris). But, this is only her 6th nomination, so she won't take that record away from Harris.

Also of note is that Constantine Maroulis is the first AI contestant nominated for a Tony Award.

Big Magilla, you need to add some punctuation in there or something. It's hard to read (I realize that you probably just copied and pasted it from somewhere else).

I was wondering why more people weren't finding a spot for Stockard Channing in their predictions. Guess I should've mentioned that before now.

Wow...the entire cast of God of Carnage is nominated? How often has the entire cast of a play been up for a Tony?

I'd say this analogy somewhat overstates the critical love for Billy Elliott and underrates the enthusiasm on the positive side for Normal. Maybe La Cage aux Folles/Sunday in the Park with George?

Maybe. Maybe they'll split best musical (Billy Elliot) and best score (Next to Normal).

I'd expect these two shows to sweep the acting awards with Billy Elliot winning for best actor (the three kids) and featured actress (Haydn Gwynne) and Next to Normal winning for best actress (Alice Ripley) and featured actor (either J. Robert Spencer or Aaron Tveit).

I was actually going to reference that Lion King victory at the Drama Critics as something to watch as precedent this year. If Billy Elliott has enough baseline critical support to win that prize despite those who think Normal is a bloody masterpiece, it will probably waltz to the Tony.

I've never seen The Lion King, so I have no personal opinion on the outcome that year. But certainly both it and Ragtime were wildly acclaimed.

Also, don't go looking to the precursors for help this year. Next to Normal's earlier incarnation off-Broadway had it already competing for the Outer Critics and Drama Desk in prior years. Producers argued it was a substantially changed show and should be reconsidered. The powers that be said, okay, but you have to give us free tickets -- which the producers of Normal failed to do in time before the deadline. So, the show is ineligible for anything but the Drama Critics and Tonys.
