Barrymore Directs With Hugs

27 October 2008 6:29 PM, PDT

Drew Barrymore coaxed starring performances out of the cast of her directorial debut Whip It! by showering them with hugs and kisses.

The actress stepped behind the camera to direct Ellen Page and rapper-turned-actress Eve in the movie, about a women's roller derby.

And Eve gives an insight into how the rookie filmmaker got the best out of her cast: "(She) is the biggest hippie I've ever met. I got more hugs and kisses with her than I get from my family.

"Even though we were bruised and bashed around, Drew was there to hug us and give us love."
