Yes, Sobieski's been rather MOA in recent years. Looking at her filmography I'd completely forgotten she was in Eyes Wide Shut, and that was the last thing I saw her in, I think.

I haven't seen A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries but will check it out thanks to your recommendation, Damien - and I see that both Harley Cross and Jesse Bradford are in it, which is a big plus for me!

One more performance I love from that year: Marisa Tomei in Slums of Beverly Hills (the film which I could have swallowed a sentimental supporting Alan Arkin oscar for, too).

Another terrific supporting actress performance from 1998: Barbara Hershey in A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries. (Which brings up the question, Whatever happened to the wonderful Leelee Sobieski?)

The Comeback was a brilliant show. I think it didn't catch on because it was one of the most painful and uncomfortable (while simultaneously hilarious) series imaginable.

Wasn't sold on Kudrow. She was funny enough but it was hardly the scene-stealing role I'd been lead to expect.

Along with Allen's brilliantly subtle, quietly amusing 50s mom, my favourite supporting female performances of the year were from actresses I don't as a rule rate all that highly - Kate Beckinsale, wonderfully bitchy in The Last Days of Disco, and Anjelina Jolie, touching and sweet in Playing By Heart.

Agreed, Akash. The Comeback is one of the most brilliant things that HBO has ever put on and it was vastly under-appreciated during its one season run. Amazing show and so uncomfortable to watch! It was so meta-riffic, too – it knew exactly what it was and never pandered to cheap comic riffs and stunts. Intelligent writing. Loved the running gag that no one would call her hairdresser out for being gay. I miss that show.

Oh I agree Flipp, Lisa Kudrow should have WON supporting actress that year. She steals the show in The Opposite of Sex. And then the Emmys add to the indignity by having her lose for her brilliant season on The Comeback to that ex-Seinfeld troll.

1. Joan Allen for Pleasantville

I’m still disappointed that Joan Allen didn’t receive a nomination for her supporting turn in Pleasantville. I thought it was definitely one of the best performances that year. She took the archetypal 1950’s housewife and humanized her, carefully measuring her sexual awakening with the changing world around her. The scene when she turns around to reveal her colored face is masterful and the scene where “Betty” first experiences an orgasm culminating in her entire black-and-white bathroom blossoming into color and the tree outside her window bursting into flames is fiercely memorable.

Though, to be fair, 1998 was definitely a stellar year for Best Supporting Actress featuring great work from Lynn Redgrave, Judi Dench (whose win I still don’t have a problem with), Rachel Griffiths, and Kathy Bates. I would’ve definitely taken out Brenda Blethyn’s shrill harpy performance of a horrendously unappealing character and replaced it with Allen, Lisa Kudrow for The Opposite of Sex or Kimberly Elise for Beloved.

This, as well as her role in The Ice Storm, is one of several of Allen's versions of the "suffering supporting wife" role she seems to have perfected over the years. Others include The Crucible and Nixon, both for which she was nominated.

How much time am I going to waste looking through these?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much . . .

:)

P.S. I would enjoy song lists even if just in the years you like, if you had the time to compile them.

For anyone who may be interested, I painstakingly went through each and every year and re-listed my picks in order of preference in all eight categoreis - best picture, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress (the latter two categories beginning in 1929), best written drama and best written musical or comedy.

I considered adding best song, but changed my mind as I coudln't really come up with five songs for every year of the last twenty or so that I think deserve to be considered. The early years, though, still provide a wealth of choices starting with the first year of that award - 1934 - when the year's best songs, "I Only Have Eyes for You" from Dames, "I'm in the Mood for Love" from Every Night at Eight. "Did You Ever See a Dream Walking?" from Sitting Pretty, "The Object of My Affection" from Times Square Lady and "On the Good Ship Lollipop" from Bright Eyes weren't even nominated. The best song from The Gay Divorcee, "Night and Day" was ineligible as it wasn't an original so they had to settle for "The Continental", a tour de force dance number that is very hummable, but hardly rolls off the tongue as easily as the timeless classics that were overlooked that year and in many subsequent years.
