This group is odd to me because it really does feel like they go out of their way to spread the wealth.

In 2012, they gave Best Actor to Bradley Cooper for Silver Linings Playbook. Then in 2018, they were clearly big enough fans of A Star is Born to give it Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor but settled on Best Director for Bradley Cooper. Is that because they gave him Best Actor a few years prior or because they really though his directing is what made the film? Either way, I'm reticent to select Cooper for Actor or Mulligan for Actress because both performers were recent winners from the group (2012 for Cooper and 2009 for Mulligan).

Despite his Breakthrough Performer Award in 2003 (what?), Paul Giamatti has never won an award for Best Actor. The awards season is pretty young but if there's been one loser thus far it's been Giamatti. You'd think he'd be a sure shot to show up at the Gothams or the Spirits Awards (he's won both) but his very showy role has been a no-show thus far. I feel like this group might go for it.

I feel like predicting The Iron Claw for best picture here just for shits and giggles. Either that or American Fiction.

Seems about right for this group. Ensemble for The Iron Claw seems like a stretch for them, but you never know.
It was between that, American Fiction, and Oppenheimer.

I think I'm going to change it to Oppenheimer honestly. It's the safe bet for them.

National Board of Review predictions

Post by Sabin »

Next up...

Since 2016, almost all of their choices have been within the ballpark of a nomination but they always miss about one. In 2020, they missed two:
--2022: Janelle Monae, Glass Onion (Best Supporting Actress)
--2021: Rachel Zegler, West Side Story (Best Actress)
--2020: Da 5 Bloods (Best Picture & Director)
--2019: Adam Sandler, Uncut Gems (Best Actor)
--2018: Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born (Best Actor)
--2017: Tom Hanks, The Post (Best Actor)
--2016: Amy Adams, Arrival (Best Actress)

They're the National Board of Review so it makes sense to just go normy and assume one of them won't make it.

Best Film: Killers of the Flower Moon
Best Actor: Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers
Best Actress: Sandra Huller, Anatomy of a Fall
Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey, Jr., Oppenheimer
Best Supporting Actress: Da'Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
Best Director: Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer
Best Original Screenplay: The Holdovers
Best Adapted Screenplay: American Fiction
Breakthrough Performance: Charles Melton, May December
Best Animated Film: The Boy and the Hero
Best Documentary: American Symphony
Best International Film: Anatomy of a Fall
Best Directorial Debut: Past Lives
Best Ensemble: Oppenheimer
Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography: Oppenheimer
NBR Freedom of Expression Award: All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt
