By definition, we always comment blindly on Cannes, since none of us have seen any of the films in question. This year, for whatever reason, I feel even more distant than usual from the outcomes -- plus, it was widely seen as a weak vintage. But I did watch the ceremony on YouTube. Thoughts:
Ostlund didn't seem the likeliest multi-Palme guy, but he apparently chose the right year for the second time, as nothing had overwhelming support without countervailing opposition.
Case in point: the reception for Close's runner-up prize was FAR more enthusiastic -- but there are also people out there who find that film hideously manipulative. It might, however, be the movie that has greater impact in the American/Oscar market later this year.
Of course I haven't seen Broker, but, as a fan of both Kore-eda and Song Kang-ho, I was very happy about the best actor choice.
If you didn't watch, you can't imagine how long the winning actress from Holy Spider spoke. They played walk-off music at least 3-4 times, and each time she simply picked back up. We know (from Damien's reporting) that the Greer Garson speech length was wildly exaggerated. This one, I think, was the it-really-did-happen version of that myth.

Strong reviews for the latest Park Chan-Wook. Has it really been six years since The Handmaiden?

Re: Cannes 2022
I'm really surprised that they would let Farhadi on the jury this year, especially since he's been credibly accused of plagiarism.
