Oscar Winners Predictions Contest
Re: Oscar Winners Predictions Contest
I've done better. I'll do worse.
The only categories that I didn't at least get a runner up are Best Live Action Short Film, Best Actress, and Best Film Editing. But with Jeoffrey in the running, I would have had to go more out on a limb on a few to even qualify.
I wish I didn't underestimate the amount of support for Meryl Streep or that it's even conceivable that the foreign branch could recognize something as awesome as A Separation.
Call I'm most proud of? Hugo for Cinematography. Call I'm least proud of? Hugo for Cinematography.

Re: Oscar Winners Predictions Contest
This was an easy choice for me. Firstly the subject was Oscar bait and secondly I was especially rooting for it as a Pakistani was nominated for an Oscar for the first time.OscarGuy wrote:I had a sneaking suspicion Saving Face would win it...I felt the subject matter was just too similar to recent documentaries not to tickle their fancy again. I should have changed my prediction, but didn't.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has received universal acclaim here in Pakistan for winning this high honor. Not only has she highlighted a terrible problem in our country but it has brought it out in the open for the first time thanks to the Oscar win. It cannot now be ignored. Plus being a female in a country like ours it has done wonders for all women who are in the workfield. There has been the usual silly backlash from the religious front as some morons said she should have thanked Allah (God) first and there were comments about her sleeveless outfit (traditionally females in the Islamic religion should be covered - think A Separation and how all the women in that film were dressed). But overall her win has been taken extremely positively here in Pakistan.

So, Documentary Short Subject is the only category I failed to predict every time for the last three years.

I cannot say I was predicting to do that good. Congratulations to Jefforey. Very well done.

Re: Oscar Winners Predictions Contest
THE RESULTS!!!!!
First of all a note: I gave bonus points to everyone who predicted The Artist for most wins (also to Sabin who predicted Hugo). However, two people (Mister Tee and FilmFan720) actually predicted The Artist and Hugo will tie for most wins and it seems weird to not reward that so I'm giving them one more point for that prediction.
Thanks to ksrymy for tabulating the results but I did still double-checked them just to be sure.
19. HarryGoldfarb: 30 + 6 = 36 points
18. criddic3: 35 + 3 = 38 points
17. (tie) Oscar Guy: 38 points* (didn't do bonus)
16. mlrg: 42 points* (didn't do bonus)
15. Filmfan720: 36 + 6 + 1 = 43 points
14. Sonic Youth: 43 + 3 = 46 points
13. (tie) Precious Doll: 40 + 6 = 46 points
12. (tie) Big Magilla: 40 + 6 = 46 points
11. Barrybrook2011: 41 + 6 = 47 points
10. The Original BJ: 43 + 6 = 49 points
09. Franz Ferdinand: 44 + 6 = 50 points
08. Mister Tee: 41 + 9 + 1 = 51 points
07. (tie) Reza: 45 + 6 = 51 points
05. anonymous1980: 46 + 6 = 52 points
05. Snick's Guy: 54 points* (didn't do the bonus)
04. Sabin: 49 + 6 = 55 points
03. Greg: 48 + 9 = 57 points
02. ksrymy: 50 + 9 = 59 points
and the winner of our Oscar winners prediction contest is....
Jefforey Smith: 57 + 6 = 63 points
What's amazing he did it without runners-up. His gamble paid off. Congratulations!

I forgot entirely about those three little questions. I guess I'm not in the competition.

Well, everyone who had Crystal's entrance just lost out as well as Whitney Houston guessers.

Re: Oscar Winners Predictions Contest
Guess I can't put this off any longer.
If the results are as utterly predictable as some of you think -- with so many no-runner-up choices -- I'm going to lose badly this year. I just don't see things as so cut-and-dried. But if thing do go so that way, given how promisingly random this season began, the Oscars might as well acknowledge they just surrender to the ongoing narrative and have no independent mind.
Film: The Artist
(ru: The Descendants)
Actor: George Clooney
(ru: Jean Dujardin)
...and I don't fully rule out Brad Pitt
Actress: Viola Davis
(ru: Meryl Streep)
Sup. Actor: Christopher Plummer
Sup. Actress: Octavia Spencer
Director: Michel Hazanavicius
(ru: Martin Scorsese)
Ad. Screenplay: The Descendants
(ru: Moneyball)
Orig. Screenplay: Midnight in Paris

Cinematography: The Tree of Life

Costume Design: Hugo

Art Direction: Hugo
Sound Mixing: Hugo

Sound Editing: Hugo

Music Score: The Artist
Song: Real in Rio
(ru: Man or Muppet)
Visual Effects: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Make Up: The Iron Lady

Animated Feature: Rango
Foreign Language Film: In Darkness

...everyone does know what In Darkness is about, don't they?
Doc. Feature: Paradise Lost 3

Doc. Short: Saving Face

Live Short: Raju

Animated Short: Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

Most awards? I have a tie between Hugo and The Artist
Last In Memoriam? Elizabeth without a doubt
Standing O? Billy's entrance seems certain, but I think BJ is quite right, that whichever of Streep/Davis wins best actress will get one
