Re: [NE] Nomination Elim Game ('06- RUDEBOY)
I was pretty surprised by the love for Haley's performance too. I guess a lot of people just wanted to find out if it was really that odd-looking little kid back on the scene, and if so where had he been all these years. For me, Jane Adams' tiny performance walked off with Little Children, even managing to survive that dreadful masturbation scene unscathed.
I'd also add Sergei Lopez in Pan's Labyrinth, another borderline lead performance that undoubtedly would have been nominated in supporting, Bill Nighy in Notes on a Scandal, Samuel Barnett in The History Boys, Stephen Fry in V for Vendetta, Daniel Craig in Infamous and even Dustin Hoffman in Perfume or Stranger Than Fiction... plenty of decent supporting male performances that year, if few great ones.

Total category fraud, but it's also the kind of category fraud that had it happened at the Oscars I wouldn't have minded. Just seeing him nominated would have been enough.(rudeboy @ Tue Jun 07, 2011 12:11 pm)

Used my rescue too early… should have saved it for Penelope Cruz. Oh well – though its fairly blatant category fraud, I want to see him mentioned, so replace Jackie Earle Haley with Kazunari Ninomiya in Letters from Iwo Jima.
2006 had a curiously weak lineup of supporting actors. Never really understood the hype for Jackie Earle Haley. You get the impression that you're just watching a creep who doesn't know he's being filmed. It's a simplistic monstrous performance that's pretty much in sync with that weak sauce film. Djimon Hounsou is certainly good in Blood Diamond, but it just feels incredibly samey to roles he's done before. Eddie Murphy went from overrated in Dreamgirls to underrated pretty quickly. He's fine, but I completely understand how he lost. Likewise I completely understand how Alan Arkin won and it doesn't bother me too much. It's not like it came at the expense of anything great. It's not Oscar-worthy, but he's got a great scene with Breslin before he...well...harmph.
I would have voted for Mark Wahlberg, although I prefer Alec Baldwin and Martin Sheen in The Departed. Not entirely sure why Michael Sheen wasn't nominated for The Queen. Anthony Mackie would have been preferable to just about everyone for Hal Nelson, and Michael Caine was pretty wonderful in both Children of Men and The Prestige.
