I caught a tUnEyArDs show a couple of years ago at a music festival--if you ever get a chance to see her live, I'd highly recommend you do so. She constructs every song before your eyes, instrument by instrument--sort of a denser, more experimental Andrew Bird. I was an immediate convert.

And "Bizness" might be the single of the year.

I was starting to think it was me, hearing a lot of the new, acclaimed music and responding "Meh." (Animal Collective? The Decemberists? Please. My 65 year old mother is a Decemberists fan, so how good could they be?) But I love love LOVE Merrill Garbus, aka tUnE-yArDs. I love her music, I love her one-woman aesthetic, I love her backstory, I love her lack of clothes sense, I love that she looks nothing like how her voice sounds (which is: a white, sloppy, disshevelled, suburban univeristy kid, and Roberta Flack if she screamed at the top of her lungs, respectively). Her album entitled "whokill" is maybe the most exciting new music I've heard in ten years. The last time I had this feeling - that I was listening to something truly new, innovative, and kaleidoscopic - was with Beck's "Odelay", and that didn't last long because once I got used to the all the sound effects there really wasn't much there. That's not going to happen here because Garbus has more brains, heart, soul and substance than Beck ever will, or most musicians for that matter. Yes, there is a lot of good music out there, and there's quite a bit I enjoy. But she is a true musical genius.

The main parts of Pomp and Circumstances, sure, but I like the beginning, the parts that don't sound as familiar and, you guys may scoff, but the version performed in Fantasia 2000 was thrilling.

As for Holst's Planets. I prefer Mars, I think it's the more evocative piece, but I haven't listened to it all the way through in a year or two.

I have The Planets, conducted as wrote Holst it--I did not know there was an "arrangement" by Slatkin, but he would have conducted and recorded the piece as written in the score. "Jupiter" is indeed thrilling. I love British music --Elgar( Cello Concerto), Delius(Song Of Summer); John Ireland's and Bliss's Piano concertos etc. NOT Pomp and Circumstance--it has been played to death!

Campbell, have you ever heard Leonard Slatkin's arrangement and orchestration of Holst's 'The Planets'? As a man who enjoys classical music I reccomend you check it out. His 'Jupiter' is simply excellent. I hope to hear this suite live someday.

Since 1960, my musical tastes have run to musical theatre or classical( romantic piano concertos of the 20th century). I used to be an avid listener of pop etc. but no longer. Once in awhile I hear something I like: Bet E. and Stef, Sting, Marc Antoine,etc.

We had a music list like this and I never even knew?? I love music and it is great to read all of your favorites, we are an eclectic bunch! I have well over 600 CDs and spattering of vinyl, so trying to narrow down my faves into a coherent list is usually a fruitless and ever-changing task, but always a lot of fun.
