Is Hugo the most nominated film ever without an acting nomination?

I suppose I haven't been following the race that closely this year. I was aware of Branagh floating around but not McTeer; in a way, not being aware made the nomination announcement more exciting than last year.

- no Tintin in Animated Feature is a shame, it was easily one of the most fun and technically adept movies of the year. Is motion-capture ready to be written off?

Franz, regarding Branagh and McTeer, they were contenders on their own. Matter of fact, I was more certain of McTeer's nomination than Close's.

Some trivial observations.

No nomination for Tintin for animated film. No Cars 2 either.

Pina nominated for Documentary feature but not Foreign Language. That possibility didn't happen.

Harry Potter nominated for Make-up, F/X and Art Direction. No Best Picture, no Supporting actor. Guess that's settled.

Madonna has now made an Oscar nominated film (W.E. for costumes).

My observations:

Best Picture

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is the surprise. Not a great film, but it doesn't deserve to be the whipping boy a lot of the critics have made it. Nice to see the underdog nominated instead of the godawful Bridesmaids, although Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy should also have made it in.

Best Actor

Gary Oldman finally has an Oscar nomination. Can he win over a split in the pretty boy vote between Clooney and Pitt or will all hail Dujardin?

Best Actress

Rooney Mara over Tilda Swinton? Oh, well, at least Tilda already has an Oscar.

Best Supporting Actor

Go Max, go! I still don't get what Jonah Hill did to deserve an Oscar nomination, but, oh well.

Best Supporting Actress

I was hoping for Vanessa Redgrave over Shailene Woodley, not Ms. Mccarthy, but, what the hell.

Animated Feature

No Tintin, and who he hell are Chico and Rita? Rango has this one in a bag.

Original Song

Two dull nominees. Either throw out the new rules or eliminate the category altogether. This is beyond ridiculous.

Remaining categories:

Pretty much as expected.

Scattered thoughts:
- might Hugo benefit from enough Marty-love to pull an upset in Picture, and earn Scorsese another Director trophy?
- 9 nominees for Picture, thank God they didn't get roped in and make Bridesmaids the tenth.
- Academy Award nominee Jonah Hill....happy to see Warrior get at least a little love in the form of Nick Nolte.
- only two songs for Original, and no residual love for Trent Reznor? Just scrap the musical segment this year, thanks.
- Seems that a couple of supporting actors got swept into the mix on the heels of strong leads (Branagh, McTeer). Were they even factors on their own?
- how has Demian Bichir flown completely under the radar? That's the type of surprise nod I love to see.
- the Transformers franchise now has 7 nominations to its name...
- A token nod for Drive in Sound Editing reminds me of other glaring omissions: Fassbender, Fincher, etc.
- the Harry Potter franchise tops out with a total of 12 nominations, with zero wins as of today.

I was ready to be completely apathetic towards the race this year, but as always, the nominations get me all fluttered.

Their commercial website lists four, but their .org website has five.

I'm disappointed in a lot of these nominees. There were some amazing performances this year left in the cold by rubbish.

And don't get me started on the shit-tastic Original Song list? They may have just sealed their own elimination. Not only are these songs not going to be that fun to present at the Oscars, they aren't very good. Man or Muppet is ok, but the other two songs from the film were better and the Rio song is shit. They also missed out on opportunities to have Sinead O'Connor, Lady Gaga, Elton John and Mary J Blige perform at the Oscars.

I'm disappointed Albert Brooks was snubbed. HOWEVER, The Tree of Life's nominations in Director and Picture more than makes up for it. Or any disappointing exclusions or inclusions, really. I love the fact that the Academy nominated this divisive, difficult, beautiful art film that's frankly a masterpiece and will be embraced as such for years to come. It's not going to win but its nomination shows that there's still good, adventurous tastes within the Academy. Bravo.

Hah! AMPAS's own website only has 4 nominees for Art Direction. So much for checking on the most reliable source.

Nomination count (only for Best Picture noms)

Hugo - 11
The Artist - 10 (good enough to beat Hugo and Scorsese)
Moneyball - 6
War Horse - 6
The Descendants - 5
The Help - 4
Midnight in Paris - 4
The Tree of Life - 3 (including cinematography)
Extremely Loud - 2 (got in by a hair; the Sydow nom should have been a clue)

I think these are right, but please correct me if not.

ETA: You know, I could've just gone onto AMPAS's own website, selected "View by Film" and saved me a lot of hassle.
