I liked Melissa Leo in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and 21 Grams, and Homicide before that, but I haven't been too impressed with her run lately. (Including her work on HBO's Treme.)

Dale Dickey in Winter's Bone registers rural working class in a way that Leo never approached in Frozen River.

Am I the only one who thinks Dickey is the poor man's Melissa Leo?

Other way around. There is something very genuine in Dickey that Leo strains through ignobly. I bought Leo in 21 Grams and nothing since. Dickey would have been a stronger choice with her role in The Fighter, as would Margo Martindale or Celia Weston or any number of actresses who refuse to play struggle and bravery in italics.

I think Melissa Leo is the poor man's Melissa Leo.

Black Swan might even win nothing tonight at the Oscars - or only Best Actress. But it's the best American movie of the year, and I'm glad that it triumphed here.

And nice to see Hawkes and Dickey too.

Didn't watch the show. I'm very pleased that John Hawkes won over Mark Ruffalo. Outside of that, it's the only group that honored The King's Speech for Best Foreign Film.

I got four out of fourteen, who who really cares about these awards?

I tried watching a bit of it on TV, but it was dreadful. I don't know if the presenters do their own writing, hire their own writers or if it's all given to them, but I suspect one of the former because some of them appear extremely amateurish while some of them (Nicole Kidman, Jermey Renner in the little I saw) come off really classy.

Nice of Melissa Leo to show up even though she wasn't nominated for anything. It was another opportunity for her to show off the tattoo above her left breast in another low cut outfit on another cold day.

They should call the organization "The Lower-Budget Academy Awards".

This group has been an embarassment for years.

Do you mean Daddy Longlegs for the John Cassavetes Award?

I did surprisingly well on this one. I missed the above as well as First Screenplay and Supporting Actor. And the rule of thumb, pick the Oscar nominee, worked entirely as usual, though Supporting Actor had two, I just went with reliable Ruffalo instead of Hawkes. Too bad.

John Cassavetes Award - Go Get Some Rosemary
Best Director - Darren Aronfsky, Black Swan
Best Male Lead - James Franco, 127 Hours
Best Female Lead - Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Best Supporting Male - John Hawkes, Winter's Bone
Best Supporting Female - Dale Dickey, Winter's Bone
Best Screenplay - The Kids Are All Right
Best First Screenplay - Tiny Furniture
Best Cinematography - Black Swan
Best Documentary - Exit Through the Gift Shop
Truer Than Fiction - Marwencol
Someone to Watch - Mike Ott, Littlerock
Producer's Award - Anish Savjani, Meek's Cutoff
Robert Altman Award - Please Give (for some reason)

...didn't post my predictions, but I called Ruffalo instead of Hawkes, Watts instead of Dickey, Tiny Furniture instead of Get Low, and The Exploding Girl instead of Go Get Some Rosemary. Very pleased for John Hawkes. I figured Winter's Bone would come up bupkiss.
