Haven't seen O'Neil's predictions but Viggo Mortensen is indeed a contender. Not likely, but certainly possible.

I haven't posted mine yet, was waiting for the DGA and some other things, but Tom O'Neil has posted his and I'm flummoxed by a couple of things:

Why is Viggo Mortensen even being talked about for The Road? I mean the BFCA nominated him so he must be a contender? I hardly think so. The film was a box office failure, the film has been cited so infrequently (neither the Globes or the Satellites, with ten nominations, could find a place for him or the film). Is it simply Tom O'Neil's wishful thinking? No, it can't be because I've seen others mention it too.

Then, his argument for Avatar to get a screenplay nomination doesn't hold water. He seems to think the WGA nomination is reason he will get nominated, yet he doesn't mention the eligibility rules that kept at least two screenplays off the list.

And someone said that because No Country for Old Men was popular with the Academy, they love Cormac McCarthy, which is about ludicrous.

I think The Hangover has a shot at getting in Original Screenplay (maybe even Best Picture).

I think Tucci's safe, and I still think Star Trek will make Best Picture.

My final set of predictions.

BEST PICTURE
Avatar
The Blind Side
District 9
An Education
(500) Days of Summer
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious
Up
Up in the Air
Comments: taking a chance on The Blind Side instead of Invictus. I think a lot of elderly Academy voters are going to like it.

BEST DIRECTOR
Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
Neill Blomkamp, District 9
James Cameron, Avatar
Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
Quentin Tarantino, Inlgourious Basterds
Comments: I now predict Blomkamp.

BEST ACTOR
Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
George Clooney, Up in the Air
Colin Firth, A Single Man
Morgan Freeman, Invictus
Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker
Comments: if only there were one person to rally around like Damon, Foster, Mortensen, or Stuhlbarg, but noooooo!

BEST ACTRESS
Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Helen Mirren, The Last Station
Carey Mulligan, An Education
Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia
Comments: yyyyyyyup. Here it is.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
Anthony Mackie, The Hurt Locker
Alfred Molina, An Education
Christopher Plummer, The Last Station
Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
Comments: either Damon or Tucci is getting shut-out. And either Mackie, Molina, or McKay is getting in.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air
Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
Melanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds
Mo'Nique, Precious
Julianne Moore, A Single Man
Comments: I don't think that Morton has enough screen-time. Nine has melted down completely. For the last slot, that leaves either Kruger or Laurent. I'm going to bet on Laurent.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
(500) Days of Summer
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
A Serious Man
Up
Comments: looks pretty locked up to me.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
District 9
An Education
In the Loop
Precious
Up in the Air
Comments: D9, An Education, and Up in the Air are good. The last spots are between The Blind Side, Fantastic Mr. Fox, In the Loop, and Precious. One for me, one for you...

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Avatar
Fantastic Mr. Fox

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
"All is Love" ~ Where the Wild Things Are
"Almost There" ~ The Princess and the Frog
"I See You" ~ Avatar
"Take It All" ~ Nine

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Coraline
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Princess and the Frog
Up
Comments: poor Ponyo.

BEST FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM
Ajami
