About time for me to actually post something sort of official for my picks.

BEST PICTURE

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Frost/Nixon
Let the Right One In
Slumdog Millionaire

- I went back and forth between Rachel Getting Married and Let the Right One In as my fifth choice. Most recent years, I have included at least one foreign language film in best picture, so that won the spot. No film engaged me more or put a smile on my face as bright as Slumdog Millionaire.

BEST DIRECTOR

Tomas Afredson, Let the Right One In
Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
David Fincher, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Ron Howard, Frost/Nixon
Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight

- Fincher's Seven was a best picture nominee in 1995, but he missed the cut for directing. Howard is on his fifth nomination in this category (he won for Apollo 13, 1995). Nolan won for original screenplay for Memento in 2001. Alfredson is on his first. Boyle, also on his first nod, wins.

BEST ACTOR

Clint Eastwood, Gran Torino
Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn, Milk
Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler

- Eastwood is on his third, possibly final, acting nomination. Langella is on his debut nod. Penn is on his fourth nomination (he won in 1999 for Sweet & Lowdown.) Pitt is also on his fourth nod, having won in supp. for 12 Monkeys in'95. Rourke wins on his first try.

BEST ACTRESS

Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie, Changeling
Melissa Leo, Frozen River
Meryl Streep, Doubt
Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road

- First for Hathaway. Jolie was nominated last year for A Mighty Heart. Leo's first. Winslet's 7th nod, and she won for supp. back in '96 for Hamlet. Streep wins her first after 5 previous attempts.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Josh Brolin, Milk
Robert Downey, Jr., Tropic Thunder
James Franco, Milk
Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt
Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight

- Brolin and Franco are newcomers. Downey won best actor in 1992 for Chaplin. Hoffman was nominated for Capote in '05. Heath Ledger defeated him then, and again now.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Amy Adams, Doubt
Viola Davis, Doubt
Taraji P. Henson, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler
Kate Winslet, The Reader

- Adams was nominated last year for Enchanted in lead. Henson debuts. Tomei is on her fourth nod, having won twice (My Cousin Vinny, 1992, and In the Bedroom, 2001). Winslet on her 8th (see Best Actress).

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight

- Unusually, this category matches up with Best Picture.

So there is more than one person on this board that would choose Slumdog Millionaire, of the 650 films released this calendar year (per Slant) as best picture in their own personal 2008 Oscar ceremony....?

Mind boggling

You have some interesting choices, barrybrooks, but I don't understand why you have George Clooney in Lead for Burn After Reading if Philip Seymour Hoffman is Supporting for Doubt.
