I saw criddic updated his and i saw a few of you all rank the contenders in the slumdog thread...but i'm interested in seeing how you all rank everything you've seen this year.

I tend to only put in a Top Ten at the end of the year. However seeing as the local festival has just wrapped here is that list.

Vancouver International Film Festival 2008:
*****
Heaven On Earth (Canada)
- Deepa Mehta (Water) continues to impress me 17 years after I saw her first film.
Sell Out! (Malaysia)
Tricks (Poland)

****
The Good, The Bad And The Weird (South Korea)
RocknRolla (UK)
The Song of Sparrows (Iran)
Sita Sings The Blues (USA)
- If this animated gem were to get a release in 2008 then it could really add to the competion in the Animated Film category
Maman Est Chez Le Coiffeur (Canada)
I Am Good (Czech Republic)
Il Divo (Italy)
- I have no knowledge of Italian politics in this era and did not know who was who, but that did not matter. The creative touches make this a standout.
Sparrow (Hong Kong)
- best cinematography I have seen all year, plus a brilliant score which makes this non-musical sound like one.
Dunya And Desie (Netherlands)
Stone of Destiny (Scotland, Canada)
Passage (Canada)

***
Captain Abu Raed (Jordan)
O'Horten (Norway)
The Chicken, The Fish and the King Crab (Spain)
The Equation of Love And Death (China)
Chris And Don: A Love Story (USA)
The Grocer's Son (France)
Orz Boys (Taiwan)
Let The Right One In (Sweden)
I've Loved You So Long (France)
Real Time (Canada)
Parking (Taiwan)
The Girl By The Lake (Italy)
Hansel And Gretel (South Korea)
Chelsea On The Rocks (USA)
A Portrait Of Diego (Mexico)
Gomorra (Italy)
- very disappointed that Italy chose this over Il Divo for submission to the Foreign Film Category.
Among The Clouds (Iran)
Tulpan (Kazakhstan)
Correction (Greece)

**
Magnus (Estonia/UK)
Blink (Philippines)

**
Drifter (Germany)
Altar (Philippines)

The films everyone was talking about:
Waltz With Bashir
I've Loved You So Long
Cherry Blossoms - Hanami
Adoration (Atom Egoyan)
The English Surgeon (doc)
The Wrecking Crew (doc)

The Land of Wandering Souls was an excellent documentary. I really wanted to see this when it played in Vancouver at the festival but couldn't fit it in.

Le Papier ne peut pas envelopper la braise.

It's a highly disturbing documentary about Cambodian prostitutes, filmed by the great Rithy Panh (S21, Land of Wandering Souls). Just thinking about it a little longer is making me think maybe it ought to be promoted to the next rank, or at least a higher slot in the **+ range.
