Hit film Ghost is being adapted into a television series by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman.

Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner will write a pilot, based on the 1990 film starring Demi Moore and the late Patrick Swayze.

In July the Paramount studio launched a TV division aimed at reworking classic movies for the small screen.

Earlier this year the studio collaborated with Sony TV on a Beverly Hills Cop pilot starring Eddie Murphy, though the show was not picked up.

Ghost was nominated for five Oscars, including best picture, and eventually won two - best supporting actress for Whoopi Goldberg and best original screenplay.

The film sees a man who, having been killed in a mugging, tries to contact his fiancee via a psychic to warn her she is in danger.

Its pottery wheel scene, featuring the Righteous Brothers' version of Unchained Melody, is among the most spoofed in film history.

Jerry Zucker's film went on to inspire a stage musical that ran on the West End and Broadway.

"We are thrilled to collaborate with Akiva and Jeff, two deeply creative and accomplished talents, on the television adaptation of this classic supernatural drama," said Paramount Television President Amy Powell.

A network is not currently attached and no casting has been announced.

Goldsman won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for the 2001 drama A Beautiful Mind.

The writer recently made his directorial debut with Winter's Tale, a supernatural fantasy that reunites Mind stars Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe.
