This is a good human interest story, and it needs more than just a routine announcement to fully appreciate it. It's the equivalent of "No studio would distribute our Oscar winning film!".

The last sentence in the article really brought a smile to my face.

"The 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded "for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae" with one half to Saul Perlmutter and the other half jointly to Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Riess."

The ages of the three winners range from 41 to 52, which is fairly young for science laureates.

2011 Nobel Prizes

Post by Greg »

The 2011 Nobel Prizes are being announced this week. Today, the prize in Physiology Or Medicine "was divided, one half jointly to Bruce A. Beutler and Jules A. Hoffmann 'for their discoveries concerning the activation of innate immunity' and the other half to Ralph M. Steinman 'for his discovery of the dendritic cell and its role in adaptive immunity'." A tragic irony is that Ralph Steinman died a few days before the announcement. The committee only found out after it attempted to contact him. He died of pancreatic cancer and was using his research as treatment.
