Liking what Sabin said, and due to an internal struggle with We Own the Night, I'm already instituting his 1/4 star rating

****
1. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Andrew Dominik)

***1/2
2. Gone Baby Gone (Ben Affleck)
3. Ratatouille (Brad Bird)

***1/4
4. We Own the Night (James Gray)

***
5. Superbad (Greg Mottola)
6. Eastern Promises (David Cronenberg)
7. Zodiac (David Fincher)
8. Away From Her (Sarah Polley)
9. Knocked Up (Judd Apatow)
10. Lust, Caution (Ang Lee)

**1/2
11. Breach (Billy Ray)
12. Grindhouse (Tarantino/Rodriguez et al.)
13. Spiderman 3 (Sam Raimi)
14. Transformers (Michael Bay)

**
15. The Simpsons Movie (David Silverman)
16. 3:10 to Yuma (James Mangold)
17. 300 (Zach Snyder)
18. Blades of Glory (Josh Gordon/Will Speck)
19. 1408 (Mikael Hafstrom)

*1/2
20. Aqua Teen Hunger Force (Maiellaro/Willis)
21. 30 Days of Night (David Slade)
22. Live Free or Die Hard (Len Wiseman)

*
23. Catch and Release (Susannah Grant)
24. Pirates of the Caribbean (Gore Verbinski)
25. Wild Hogs (Walt Becker)

1/2
26. Because I Said So (Michael Lehmann)

I feel like I've seen a lot of crap, I think it has a lot to do with spending a lot of time in the air, and these ratings are certainly subject to change quite a bit

Up this weekend and soonly- Control, The Host, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

Eh. We're doing it however we want to I guess. I like the **** scale, but beyond that I'm also a fan of 1/4 stars. 'Cause, I mean, really, there's a big difference between *** and ***1/2.

Can I just say how bowled over I am by this year? Even if I'm a little wobbly on giving 'No Country for Old Men' ****, the first hour-45 is astonishing, and I was knocked the fuck out by 'I'm Not There'. 'Offside', 'Gone Baby Gone', and 'We Own the Night' have a great deal of merit, and already I've got a decent top ten list full of very, very solid films and I haven't seen half of what I need to already.

2006 was a fairly miraculous year and 2007 is following suit very strongly. My five favorite movies last year were 'Children of Men', 'The Departed', 'Letters from Iwo Jima', 'The Lives of Others', and 'Pan's Labyrinth' which were all released within the past twelve, thirteen months, and coupling those five masterpieces with 'The Assassination of Jesse James', 'The Host', 'Into the Wild', 'No Country for Old Men', and 'Zodiac'. This really is proving to be an astonishing age for film.

I'm confused, are we doing our ratings out of **** or out of *****?

Marginally better than the first two for sure (how could they not be?) but still a complete waste after Cuaron's work on Azkawhatever.

I've only seen two films this year I'd rank that high -- Ratatouille and The Assassination of Jesse James. Third on my list (though not four stars) would probably be 28 Weeks Later.

EDIT: Ok, I just noticed Criddic has "300" at number one, also with our stars. It all makes sense now.
It was the best popcorn flick this year IMO. I find that the visuals and story of the movies, though straying from the books more than they should, interesting. My scale isn't very weighted either. If the movie was among movies from previous years then Potter would be lower on the list, but compared to the movies I've seen this year that's where it stands.

I still need to watch the following:
Zodiac
Eastern Promises
Lars and the Real Girl
and the films that haven't been released yet.

I thought the most recent Harry Potter movie was unspeakable garbage, making the first three mediocrities look like masterclasses by comparison. Imelda Staunton's performance may well be the worst of the year. For the record, I loved the fourth one.

My (thin) tally for the year so far.

8

Superbad
Into the Wild
Control

7

Atonement
Away from Her
Zodiac
The Simpsons Movie

6

The Mark of Cain
Bridge to Terabithia
Sunshine

4

Spider-Man 3
300

3

Clapham Junction

2

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

For whatever it's worth, I have already seen five fantastic contenders for Score and Cinematography and felt like sharing them with you all. As I look at the year thus far, I see a lot of films I admire and a lot more that aren't quite as strong as they should be.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, The Assassination of Jesse James
Michael Giacchino, Ratatouille
Brad Segal, Rocket Science
Michael Brook, Kaki King , & Eddie Vedder, Into the Wild

Cinematography
Roger Deakins, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Hyung-hu Kim, The Host
Alwin H. Kuchler , Sunshine
Rodrigo Prieto, Lust, Caution
Harris Savides, Zodiac
