All safe and sound here in Washington, D.C. Federal government shut down for Monday and Tuesday, so I had time to catch up on my master's thesis and some Netflix (Lumet's Prince of the City was INTERMINABLE!) Fortunately, I never lost power except for a couple hours of Internet/cable disruption on Monday. Thanks for checking in.
Be safe, Magilla!

Going on 43 hours in the dark. Lots of trees down here. Lots of fires all around but not close - big one on news is next town. Was able to recharge phone off tablet but must conserve - could be 7-10 more days of this

Re: Hurricane Sandy
The last e-mail I got from Peter was from his phone, so I'm pretty sure he's still without power. He is far enough inland that he didn't think there would be much effect for him, so hopefully everything is ok out that way.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
We on the Upper West Side were, as usual, spared (it's helpful to be on such high ground). The lights flickered once or twice last night, but no power interruption at all. And there don't even seem to be any stray branches on the street below. So, for us, it's a spectator event. But obviously lower Manhattan got hit very hard, and Jersey seems unfathomably wiped out (every Jersey-ite I work with is apparently without power today). On the upside: my parents in Connecticut -- who got totally smoked by the Halloween snowstorm last year -- had almost no ill effects this time out.
Sonic, I've heard references to parts of the boardwalk being washed away, but I'm not certain they're talking about the Atlantic City boardwalk -- there are apparently other, smaller boardwalks on the Jersey coast, and it's unclear if the reports you and I have both heard refer to one of those or to the big one.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
I have some family scattered throughout the hurricane pathway. At leat for now, we've been very fortunate. Everyone is okay and no one has lost any power, including my cousins who live in Manhattan (Upper West Side). Locally, a few friends have lost power and one had floodwaters threatening her house. I don't know yet if it seeped in. Our power remained intact, we have garage parking, and most of our windows face in the opposite direction of the wind, so our household really lucked out. After half a day of violent wind gusts, everything's nice and calm now, but I haven't stepped out to see how the rest of the neighborhood looks. (Our place is a bit removed from the roads.) Everything is calm now, no rain and very little wind, but part two of the storm is arriving tomorrow when it doubles back and we'll be drenched with several inches of rain. At least the winds are gone. I spent the day cooking and cooking, and portioning everything and storing it in the freezer in case we had a blackout. So, that's my hurricane story. Very banal and dull.
But what's not banal and dull is all the coverage and all the images. Unsettling! All the footage of lower Manhattan flooding only covers a small portion of the island, but the impact is extremely significant. The transportaion system is disrupted due to flooding in the subways, the financial district and major courthouses are in that area, as well as hundreds of businesses and tens of thousands of residents. We're not going to know how extensive the damage is, but New York is very resiliant and I'm hoping the disruption is short-lived. I don't think the same can be said for New Jersey, which took a battering up and down the coast. My perception may not be accurate, but for as long as I can remember Jersey was always "revitilizing" itself because its cities were perpetually in decline. That may be the cliched view of Jersey, but it's true for Atlantic City which was hardest hit, a very poor city that relies on famous luxury casinos for its revenue. And since those casinos are along the waterfront, who knows what the long-term consequences will be? And is it true that the historic boardwalk (which I visited and loved as a kid) just up and washed away?
What a mess. If there's any upside, it's a relief to see the ungodly clamor of the presidential campaign put on hold for a bit. Some things are bigger and more important than the race, and it's very nice to see both Obama and Romney acknowledge this.

I'm guessing that some of our East Coast board members won't be able to read this for a while, but I want to let you know that I'm thinking about you and hoping that all and their loved ones are safe. Mother Nature humbles us all, once again.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
We spent a few weeks without power during the big ice storm down here, so I understand how frustrating it can be. We'll hope. You guys get yourselves to a safe place.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
I'm right in its path. By some miracle, we still have power for now but many of my friends don't. This is a nasty, dangerous storm and I hope everyone in the area pulls through okay. Stay safe! I hope Magilla's power outage is nothing more than an inconvenience and that he gets his power back soon. Honestly, I'm more concerned about the inefficiency of our utility company than the storm itself.

Peter has lost power, so he may not be on for awhile.

I'm hoping that all of our East Coast members (I know of Flipp and Peter for sure) stay safe and secure through the hurricane. Don't let Miss Bullock rile ya too much.
