Today it's an even too obvious choice. The others belong to movies which, deservedly or not, are now more or less forgotten; Minnelli belongs to the history of cinema. Iconic is for once the right word, and in its original meaning; it's not only a great performance, it's a great, memorable image too. Minnelli's Sally Bowles, alone or with Joel Grey, is on the same level as, say, Melies's moon or Eisenstein's baby carriage, a symbol of an art form which, sadly, doesnt seem to produce this kind of lasting visual moments anymore. And then of course one can discuss forever if Minnelli is too much Minnelli and not enough Sally or about Minnelli's subsequent film career or whatever, but I'd say that it's a brilliant piece of acting, and Cabaret itself, of course, a brilliant movie and probably the best musical I've personally ever seen.

Today, as I said, it's an obvious choice. Yet, interestingly, judging from reliable sources including Liv Ullmann's good (and very Scandinavian) autobiography, back then it seems it wasnt so obvious. At least Ullmann herself and especially Diana Ross were considered to be possible winners, and Ross was very disappointed with the result. But seen today Ross's performance is clearly limited and unsatisfying (she certainly isn't Billie Holiday), while Ullmann and I'd say especially Cicely Tyson are more impressive though not Oscar worthy. As for Maggie Smith, like so many other Best Actress winners she was given another nomination a few years after her win, a bizarre way for the Academy to congratulate itself for having been right. But this time the movie, Travels with My Aunt, isnt good and she's miscast in it.

Starting to look like the '70s are going to be one landslide after another.

Liza Minnelli gets my vote. She gives a memorable and iconic performance in Cabaret

Ullmann is my runner up. She gives a natural performance.

Tyson is also great, but not in the same league as Minnelli and Ullmann

Smith is OK.

Ross is the worst of the bunch I most say.
