I finally saw The Bachelor Party today from when I had DVR'd it off of TCM a few weeks back. The Carolyn Jones nomination is a real head-scratcher. She's good, makes an impression with her three scenes, but she doesn't seem to believably exist outside of the film, and she disappears for about 45 minutes between her first scene and her final two, during which time we aren't exactly wondering about the character--she's truly out of sight and out of mind. Patricia Smith, as the wife of one of the men at the party, and Nancy Marchand as her sister-in-law, would've been much more deserving nominees.

Overall the movie was better than the previous Mann/Chayefsky collaboration lead me to expect. It is practically a filmed stage play, and Mann's use of different locations do nothing to open it up. But the actors are all very good, and it deals with its theme--urban professionals who have settled into things a little too easily, realizing there's not much left to make them happy--well enough. But I'm still surprised voters could've watched the movie and singled out possibly the least impressive performance out of a very solid ensemble.

I think there were a number of good supporting actress performances in 1957, but none really outstanding enough to be considered one of the all-time greats, leaving room for career achievement recognition for the delightful Lanchester as well as for a film in a rarely honored genre, the whodunit.

Kay Kendall, whom some have listed, was really one of the leads in Les Girls and a big star at the time even if her role was relatively small. Kay Thompson is delightful in her few scenes in Funny Face, but her part isn't substantial enough for the win. Ditto Cathleen Nesbitt in An Affair to Remember, Mildred Dunnock, who won a Golden Globe nomination for Peyton Place, and Sybil Thorndike who won the National Board of Review award for The Prince and the Showgirl. Oscar winner Miysohi Umeki was charming in Sayonara, and Oscar nominee Hope Lange suffered nobly in Peyton Place, but they were both also-rans in my book. Oscar nominees Diane Varsi in Peyton Place and Carolyn Jones in The Bachelor Party were fine but did more memorable work on TV in my estimation.

Elsa Lanchester's performance in Witness is fun, but not deserving of the award this year!

Star power also enters into it. Curtis in 1957 was an emerging sar, but still not quite in the front ranks. He had less screen time in The Defiant Ones and Some Like It Hot than he did in Sweet Smell of Success, but by then was a major star with billing over Sidney Potier and Jack Lemmon who were both better in their respecitve films though if you're goiing to consider him for anything it would have to be for lead in those two films.

This brings to mind a Curtis incident that some of the older guys on the board may remember. When The Defiant Ones was first broacast on network TV after Sidney Poitier had become a superstar, the network advertised the film as starring Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis. Curtis called the network and threatened to sue for reversing the billing.

I don't comprehend how you deduce Jodie Foster to be subordinate to Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs and Ralph Fiennes ot be subrodiante to Rachel Weisz in The Constant Gardener. Foster and Fiennes are the stars of their respective films. Hopkins' and Weisz's screen time suggests to many that they are supporting players in those films, while others obviously consider them co-leads.

The designation between lead and support gets really dicey when you're comparing men and women in the same film. The most famous examples of this are The Hustler and Hud. Piper Laurie in the fomer and Patricia Neal in the latter actually played supporting roles that were smaller than the actors (Jackie Gleason, Melvyn Douglas) who received supporting nods while they were recognized as leads.

It all goes back to the 1936 Academy Awards, the first year in which supporting players were recognized. Spencer Tracy, who was billed below the title in San Francisco and actually had very little screen time compared to his roles in two other major films that year (Fury, Libeled Lady) and a lot less screen time than Clark Gable and Jeannette MacDonald in that film won a best actor nomination for it while Stuart Erwin, who was in every scene of Pigskin Parade, in which his supporting cast included Judy Garland and Betty Grable, had to be content with a supporting actor nomination. Why? Because Tracy was a major film star and Erwin, known mostly for his radio work, was not.

Well, they're your lists. I guess I just can't understand how an actor with substantially more screen time can ever be supporting an actor with less screen time but a less "subordinate" role.

By that logic, Jodie Foster is a supporting actress in The Silence of the Lambs because she is subordinate to Hopkins, and Ralph Fiennes is a supporting actor in The Constant Gardener because he is subordinate to Weisz.

Not nearly as odd as listing William Holden as supporting actor for The Bridge on the River Kwai as one of us did.

1957 was a great year for both leadiing and supporting actors. I had no room among my lead actor nominees for Andy Griffith in A Face in the Crowd, much less Curtis who would be my seventh choice. Unlike Griffith, though, who is clearly the lead in his film, Curtis' character is subordinate to Burt Lancaster's even if he has more screen time. Thus he makes my list of supporting actors while Lee J. Cobb in 12 Angry Men and both Adolphe Menjou and George Macready in Paths of Glory don't, although I would like to have had room for all of them.

I would like to know how not one, not two, but THREE people on this board have Tony Curtis listed as a SUPPORTING actor for Sweet Smell of Success?

Sometimes the line between lead and supporting is blurry. But considering that Curtis plays the film's protagonist, and appears in nearly every scene, I think y'all have some major explainin' to do.
