A friend of mine had a scene with Winger in Terms of Endearment (a scene that didn't survive final cut). His view was that she wasn't difficult for the sake of it, but because she was some combination of highly driven and significantly insecure. (He said she'd tearily say to James Brooks "I just want to be sure it's GOOD"). This probably accounts for both her great ability and the problems others have had in working with her.

Though obviously some are willing to go along -- Brooks singled her out in his Oscar speech, and wanted her a few years later for Broadcast News. And Gabriel Byrne, who worked with her on A Dangerous Woman, presumably had something to do with getting her onto In Treatment, on which she demonstrates she's still a hell of an actress with the right material.

As far as, when did she stop being a star? -- I'd say her string of duds post Legal Eagles (which, silly or not, did do some business) had dropped her several rungs in industry eyes. By the time Shadowlands came along, it practically amounted to a comeback. I'd hoped it might signal a second stage in her career, but, alas, not -- to the point Rosanne Arquette gave her title prominence in her documentary on how actresses fade after a certain age. She's been strictly a cult favorite in this millenium.

Oh yeah? Well, here's more:

In her book "My Lucky Stars" Shirley MacLaine talked about her experience working with Debra Winger on Terms of Endearment. If you believe her, Winger was crazy; coked out and mentally disturbed. She said that during a conversation with Winger, Winger suddenly turned her backside to MacLaine, lifted up her skirt and "farted in my face." MacLaine replied "do you always talk with your mouth full?"
"The mantle of spinsterhood was definitely in her shoulders. She was twenty five and looked it."

You know, Magilla, I thought you might chime in with this kind of post which is why I debated including that last pronouncement. I'm going to stick by my original statement though that "she never really did another major film as the 'star' she had once been again." It's a very qualified statement, sure. But I would not consider A Dangerous Woman or Shadowlands to be major films. We can dither here and there on that point, but I do think that the A League of Their Own moment was a watershed moment for the trajectory of her career.

Btw, she and Nicholson were fucking during Terms of Endearment which is something that not a lot of people know.

Geena Davis, A League of their Own
Interesting little nugget I heard recently from an "insider" about A League of their Own and what went down with the original casting of Debra Winger:

So, Debra Winger was friends with Penny Marshall but was desperate to control the films she appeared in at this point in her (waning) career. Penny and Winger developed Peggy Sue Got Married for a while but Winger quit in a huff and Penny dropped out too in order to support her friend.

Years later the same thing happened with League. Winger was making all sorts of demands (one of which was that Madonna needed to be fired because she thought.) What Winger didn't realize though was that her star had faded a lot in the last few years. The studio held firm on their demands and Penny agreed to take the studio's side this time and agreed to do the film with or without Winger. Winger was still negotiating right up until the Friday before shooting was supposed to start. What she didn't know was that the studio had secretly spoken to Geena Davis and had her standing by. This would've been only two years since Davis' surprise Supporting Actress Oscar win for The Accidental Tourist, and Thelma & Louise was burning the box office after causing a firestorm of controversy so she was a hot property at the time.

The studio gave Winger until 5 o'clock that Friday to come to terms. Winger thought she was irreplaceable and didn't sign the contract. The studio then hired Davis and flew her to the location where she started shooting on Monday. It pretty much ended Winger's career as a leading lady. She never really did another major film as the "star" she had once been again.

People will, of course, say what they want about Debra Winger now, but she did have good instincts when she was actually working on a film. She knew in the middle of Legal Eagles, for example, that it was a complete shit-fest. She said the story got switched from a light romantic comedy to a thriller and back again, and was edited into a hot mess. She said Ivan Reitman was all over the place. She was right: the movie didn't seem to know what it wanted to be.

When she worked on Urban Cowboy, she would apparently stop scenes saying they weren't working, and when the director would watch it back, he realized Debra was right.

Strictly Ballroom reamins my favorite Baz Luhrmann film, but it wasn't Oscar eligible in 1992. It didn't open in the U.S. until 1993.
