Four other nomination-worthy actresses in 1950: Linda Darnell in No Way Out; Gloria Grahame in In A Lonely Place; Patricia Neal in The Breaking Point; Maureen O’Hara in Rio Grande

I would have given the Oscar to Gloria Swanson.

Every film buff knows that Claudette Colbert was first offered the role of Margo Channing in All About Eve but had to bow out when she injured her back. The part was recast with Bette Davis who gave a memorable performance and made it her own.

However, not many people remember that Miss Colbert was also on screen that same year in Three Came Home giving an equally memorable performance. The year 1950 had many great performances by leading actresses of which the 5 who made it to the list seem to have been cast in stone. I, for one, have never liked the performance of Judy Holliday (Born Yesterday) and have finally been able to get her off my list and replacing her in that slot with Colbert.

Equally memorable in this film is Sessue Hayakawa in the supporting role of the cultured camp commandant - shades of his later role in Kwai.
