Whether they are behind the camera or in front of it, this is the place to discuss all filmmakers regardless of their role in the filmmaking process.

My initial reaction at seeing the thread title was "Who?" -- but it turns out I'm familiar with much of his work, since his peak cartoon period coincided with my childhood. Tom Terrific (with Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog) was an especial favorite.

R.I.P. Gene Deitch

American born animator Gene Deitch, who bizarrely did most of his work in Czechoslovakia, has died at the age of 94.

Deitch directed five films that received Oscar nominations for Best Animated Short Film including one film that won the award (Munro) although he never got an official nomination for himself.

Munro was the first non-American film to win the category and the first Czech film to win any Oscar. Ironically, the film is thematically very American and you wouldn't guess it's technically a foreign film unless you know.
