His theme for A Man and a Woman was instantly memorable -- and, I'd argue, helped sell the film. And the Love Story theme was ubiquitous in a way few film themes these days ever get.
He started string of composers who came out of European cinema and then won Oscars in the 70s for Hollywood efforts: Michel Legrand, Nino Rota and Georges Delerue all followed.
