Things to know about Roger Moore:

Obits will (rightly) highlight his James Bond films as the peak of his fame, but, unlike Sean Connery -- who was largely unknown prior to becoming Bond -- he had had a lengthy career before taking on the role, and was widely known as the star of the TV series The Saint.

For a while, it looked like he'd be known as the guy who killed the Bond franchise, as The Man with the Golden Gun was one of the worst-performing films in the series. But then The Spy Who Loved Me turned into an unexpected critical and commercial success, and Moonraker was even bigger (though its critical reputation has nose-dived over the years). He carried on with the series till the mid-80s, and is now remembered largely for the role, despite a multitude of other credits.
