It's supposed to be satirical. It's was aimed at the same people who couldn't distinguish Eydie Gorme from Patti Smith. There really weren't any such people, which was the point. The same hypothetical people would probably not know the difference between Sparkle and Mahogany or maybe even the difference between Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand. It's stuff and nonsense.

Yes, it's obvious that the group in Sparkle is based on The Supremes, but it still doesn't make sense that the award is for "Diana Ross for her portrayal of a fashion model in Sparkle." Diana Ross plays a fashion model/designer in Mahogany, not Sparkle (a movie she is still not in and never has been).

Diana Ross isn't even in Sparkle. Irene Cara plays a kind of ersatz version of Ross in the film, but it's not, ya know, actually her. Perhaps they meant to say Mahogany? Although that was a 1975 release. :?

1976 Harvard Lampoon Movie Worst Awards

Kirk Douglas Award for Worst Actor - Clint Eastwood, The Enforcer
Natalie Wood Award for Worst Actress - Barbra Streisand, A Star Is Born. Her performance should delight those who can't tell the difference between Eydie Gorme and Patti Smith.
The Liquid-Paper-Correction-Fluid Award - Diana Ross for her portrayal of a fashion model in Sparkle. We would have sworn the woman used to be white.
The Volvo Trophy - Liv Ullmann in Face to Face as the Swedish import that always breaks down.
The Golden Glob (for the pornographic movie that limps along most lamely) - How Funny Can Sex Be?
The Roscoe Award - Margeaux Hemingway, Lipstick
The Merino Award - Shearings, a horror film about radioactive sheep in the Mojave Desert.
