This is a crusade I can’t help but embarking on. Sorry.

Yes, The Passion of Joan of Arc is masterful, and those early Hollywood talkies did struggle (though, for example, The Love Parade is great by any standard and an Ernst Lubitsch’s piece should be on any such list, imho), there was probably no real all time English speaking favorite released in LA in 1949 (what is your policy, regarding The Third Man and Adam’s Rib?), and yes, I too feel frustrated whenever I’m faced with 2000 output – I go for Wonder Boys, not a grand one, but the most enjoyable – and I totally agree with you when it comes to declaring Yi Yi as the best of it’s year. But eight decades and only three foreign best pictures?

It’s Dinner at Eight, and Magilla, you’re Billie Burke and world cinema is Louise Closser Hale and Grant Mitchell - the dependable, poor relatives one goes for only when the more glamorous guests didn’t show up. As a linguistically challenged citizen of the rest of the world I’m offended and must protest.
