I saw Y Tu Mama Tambien a couple more times. Honestly? It's pretty brilliant and closer to the no.1 spot than the bottom. I'm obsessed with good road movies and how incident can organically forward a narrative and Y Tu Mama does it rather effortlessly. The performances are brilliant, the cinematography is gorgeous, it's fantastically sexual...if it's a bit too on-the-nose at the end, I'm groovy with it. If I can justify'the v.o. for Jules and Jim, I can do the same for this one.

Chicago's fun but pretty hollow. The Hours is like going through a historectomy and I'm just screaming I DON'T HAVE A UTERUS! STOP IT! AAAH!!! Gangs of New York is laden with shards of brilliance that have been compromised by shooting and reshooting too much. It's just not successful as a whole. The Pianist & The Two Towers were the best by a substantial margin. I prefer Talk to Her and Y Tu Mama Tambien, and Late Marriage, Secretary, and maybe Adaptation., but it's so fucking indulgent and meta- that I might be projecting too much.

Y Tu Mama is a fine film, and much much better than the five films nominated for Best Picture in 2002 - especially Chicago and The Hours.

Plus Gael Garcia Bernal is in it and frequently undressed.

Really Magilla? Even though you appreciate Chicago as a good taste musical (in contrast to your dislike towards Moulin Rouge!)? Even with Polanski's effort in The Pianist? and even with some other foreign options like Talk to Her (which I found far far superior than YTMT)?

I enjoyed that film, a lot I must say, but I found the voice-off to be a turn off actually, it said too much about things shouldn't have been said, the images shoulda been enough... The cast was great-great, but the story quite conventional and the ending was actually a downer for me, almost like an afraid one... Even though I liked it and enjoyed it I would have never even nominated it for Best Picture... What are your thoughts? Why did it grow on you so much for you to consider it the Best Picture of the Year?

They didn't, but since 1928/29 didn't have actual nominees, just runners-up listed as nominees for historical purposes, the art direction and cinematography nods were based on write-ins which aren't always accurate.

How did the Academy justify this?

LOL. The character I most closely resemble in Dinner at Eight is probably the worldy wise Marie Dressler character, not the supercilious Billie Burke character, and I would much rater have dinner with the Louise Closser Hale and Grant Mitchell characters than the Wallace Beery and Jean Harlow characters any day of the week. Grant was a film buff. He and I would have a high old time discussing movies

As to where to place Adam's Rib and The Third Man, after much back-and-forth I have now settled on adhering to Academy eligibility dates as much as possible.

I ignore silly rules like "must play seven consecutive days in L.A> County"; 'must have filed proper papers with teh Academy"; cannot have been nominated for foreign language film the year before"; "cannot have been shown on television prior to its theatrical release".
