As Greg stated in the Cinematography topic, the last time the first award won by a film being Director was when Mike Nichols won...

And it must also be very unusual, if not for the first time, that the first award a movie receives is best director... I think it's the first time since McCarey (The Awful Truth).

Really great speech - perhaps they did it so early because it seemed so foregone?

It's certainly unusual since it's most often the penultimate award or even one of the last three before picture.
