I understand that the producers wanted to highlight the nominees, but why don’t split the screen and on the other half show images of the films?

Why are they so opposed to giving us any sense of what these films are about?

By just calling out names this is like my school district's Teacher of the Year banquet. (Which of course got cancelled last year when I got Teacher of the Year, although not because of the pandemic.)

Even by standards of "this was a really tough year to produce the Oscars for", this is shockingly bad.

They didn’t show us the makeup or the costumes. There’s no way of knowing what they look like. Astonishing.

This is just insider baseball. It’s absolutely contemptuous of anyone who isn’t in the industry, and probably the closest approximation to the first Academy Awards. A crony-ish dinner where names are read.

This is the first time in my life I’ve ever considered just turning it off.

In complete agreement with you. It’s 2am in my country. I’m teleworking so I don’t have to wake up as early as other Oscar nights but the thought of going to bed earlier has crossed my mind... for the first time in 29 years.

We're only 45 minutes in and we've gotten 6 categories. At this rate, to cover the remaining 17, it will take 2.83 45-minute segments, or 127.5 minutes. That would put it at 172.5, which is less than 3 hours, so give or take a montage/presentation, we'd be shorter than many prior years.

I know Hollywood people make their own schedule, but some of us have to be at work by 7:30 in the morning.

It will certainly feel like a five hour show. No clips makes it pretty boring
