Re: Boston Film Critics Awards

So, Boston said, no women-directed films in the best picture race? Check out our numbers one and two.

They also went for local lady Louisa May Alcott. Boston in the past has shown some favoritism toward area-based films. But good for Gerwig's movie, winning 4 prizes and nabbing runner-up in three more places.

Overall, though, the breadth these choices display speak to how bountiful a year it was, with Little Women, Parasite, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman, Uncut Gems, Marriage Story and Portrait of a Lad on Fire all capturing prizes, plus multiple runners-up. This ought to be what happens when there are more than a handful of worthy movies.

Saoirse clearly needed this designation more than anyone. Adam Sandler still strikes me as a critics' hope likely to be left off by the Oscars, but winning this (plus some regionals today that I'll post later) raise his profile. Dern and Pitt didn't really need the help (runner-up Pugh would have benefited more). It's funny how Pitt/Pesci have become pretty much the only candidates from what seemed a broad supporting actor field.

Toy Story 4 probably can't be stopped at the Oscars, but I Lost My Bod is making its claim to being the hipster alternative.
