Personally, I think they're equally great (and both on my personal list) but, yeah, that final scene will stay with a lot of people and I think they could vote for her on the basis of that.
That's fair.

BEST ACTRESS
Adele Haenel, Portrait of a Lady on Fire
(runners-up: Lupita Nyong'o, Us and Renee Zellweger, Judy)
Having just seen the film, how is Haenel the standout? They're both incredible but aside from the final scene Noémie Merlant gave the more memorable performance.

National Society of Film Critics Predictions

Post by Sabin »

This group is difficult to pin down. Six of their last ten awards went to The Hurt Locker, The Social Network, Amour, Spotlight, Moonlight, and Lady Bird, which range from mainstream Best Picture fare to consensus critic's fair. The other four are Melancholia, Inside Llewyn Davis, Goodbye to Language, and The Rider, movies that are kind of out there in auteurville that nobody was talking about that day. So, it's hard to know which direction they're going to go in. It's sort of hard to know which way they're going to turn. Look at 2014. I'd bet any amount of money that Boyhood would continue its sweep, but nope they went for the Godard by one point. In 2015, the one question I had was whether or not Carol or Mad Max: Fury Road would win and Spotlight won by six and ten points respectively. The one thing that seems clear is the highpoint of their memory usually tends to revolve around the Cannes Film Festival, or at the very least more so than other groups. And this year featured an absolutely crowded field which could point to wins for Atlantics, A Hidden Life, Les Miserables, Parasite, or Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Best Supporting Actress: Laura Dern, Little Women & Marriage Story
Best Director: Pedro Almodovar, Pain & Glory
