I like your Haenel choice. I actually think she might be a good choice to win.

Have you seen Marriage Story? I'm not sure she's getting nominated for it.
I just posted about Marriage Story, and addressed your question there.

I'm going on the premise that, after NBR & NY agreeing on The Irishman, LA will want to broaden the conversation. (Also, I'm not so sure it's as loved there.)

My animated feature pick is based on LA's long-standing tradition of always being more out-there than anyone else for this category.

Film: Parasite
[Once Upon a Time in Hollywood]
Actor: Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory)
[Joaquin Phoenix (Joker)]
Actress: Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story)]
[Adèle Haenel (Portrait of a Lady on Fire)]
Sup. Actor: Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
[Song Kang-Ho (Parasite)]
Sup. Actress: Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers)
[Margot Robbie (Bombshell)]
Director: Bong Joon Ho (Parasite)
[Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)]
Screenplay: Marriage Story
[Once Upon a Time in Hollywood]
Cinematography: 1917
[A Hidden Life]
Editing: Uncut Gems
[The Irishman]
Production Design: Parasite
[Once Upon a Time in Hollywood]
Music: 1917
[Marriage Story]
Foreign Language Film: Portrait of a Lady on Fire
[Pain and Glory]
Animation: Weathering with You

Non-Fiction: For Sama
[American Factory]
New Generation: Joe Talbot (The Last Black Man in San Francisco)

Los Angeles Film Critics Association Predictions

Post by Sabin »

LAFCA announces on Sunday.

LOS ANGELES FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION
Best Film: Parasite
(note: The Irishman train could continue but it just seems to me like this is where Parasite is going to pick up. LAFCA was the first group to honor Moonlight and Spotlight after all).

Best Actor: Antonio Banderas, Pain & Glory
(note: I was going to predict Adam Driver or Joaquin Phoenix, but increasingly it makes sense that Banderas might be the critical consensus choice of the year. He makes more sense as a LAFCA pick than a NYFCC pick, but if they went for him, LAFCA might co-sign.)

Best Actress: Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers
(note: like I've said elsewhere, I see them looking outside the mainstream approved five. Lopez for Hustlers makes sense. They don't seem to pay much attention to supporting vs. leading designations, but I could also see them going for Elisabeth Moss for Her Smell, Mary Kay Place for Diane, or Nyong'o again)

Best Supporting Actor: Joe Pesci, The Irishman
(note: there is no real leader in this race yet. This is where someone out of left field might show up, like Wendell Pierce for Burning Cane, Shia LeBoeuf for Honey Boy, or Willem DaFoe for The Lighthouse. But increasingly, I could see a lot of love for The Irishman manifesting itself in Pesci's beautiful performance).

Best Supporting Actress: Laura Dern, Little Women & Marriage Story
(note: I could also see Taylor Russell winning for Waves).

Best Director: Martin Scorsese, The Irishman
Best Screenplay: Knives Out
Best Cinematography: A Hidden Life
Best Music: Joker
Best Editing: Uncut Gems
Best Production Design: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Best Documentary Film: Apollo 11
Best Animated Film: I Lost My Body
