Re: NBR Winners
You over-interpret my reaction. All I meant was, after the Satellites startlingly omitted The Irishman/Scorsese from film/director, NBR put the world right again.Big Magilla wrote:I doubt that the NBR hastily put together their Icon selections based on the Satellites' snubs.Mister Tee wrote:And NBR says Feh! to the Satellites.

I think it's more likely that word of what they intended slipped out to the International Press Academy who decided to go in the other direction.
One thing the Satellites have always had a hard time with is drawing big names to their untelevised fetes so they have no expectations that Scorsese, DeNiro and Pacino will show up. The biggest draw this year will likely be Edward Norton who is being given their Auteur Award which might explain the three nods for Motherless Brooklyn.

Yes, she does. She seems better positioned than anyone connected with the film of pulling off an Oscar nomination, maybe even a win.Sabin wrote:I watched a clip of Kathy Bates in this film. Whatever misgivings people will have about this film, she looks quite good.Mister Tee wrote
Eastwood, man. Never doubt him. Good news for Bates, after the SAG snafu.
I have her on my short list, replacing Annette Bening who I found adequate at best as Dianne Feinstein in The Report.

Bates is on the SAG ballot for Lead Actress, which means she can only be nominated there at SAG.Sabin wrote:What SAG snafu?Mister Tee wrote

Glad to see Wrestle on the Documentary list! I hope people remember to give it a look in their year-end catch up. It's available to stream for free on Kanopy, if you have that, otherwise, you can rent it on Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, etc. It's not a world-changing documentary, but it's very much worth seeing.

I watched a clip of Kathy Bates in this film. Whatever misgivings people will have about this film, she looks quite good.
This has always been a weird group but over the past 5 years, three or four of their acting winners have gone onto Oscar nominations. In 2017, they went with Tom Hanks. In 2016, they went with Amy Adams. In 2014, they went with Jessica Chastain for A Most Violent Year (and Oscar Isaac tied for Best Actor). Of the four winners (Sandler, Zellweger, Pitt, Bates), at this vantage point Sandler looks like the longest shot of them if only for track record's sake. The other three actors are already in their club. Bates, Pitt, and Zellweger have three acting nominations a piece (Zellweger has one win).
"How's the despair?"

Why reward the Scorsese knockoff when the real deal delivers his best movie in years.Mister Tee wrote:Random thoughts:

Re: NBR Winners
Random thoughts:
Pensioning off DeNiro/Pacino/Scorsese with that Icon award opened the door for Tarantino's two wins.
Parasite wasn't quite a Roma-sized "we'll bump it to the main list" thing, but winning foreign-language keeps it solid. The other seemingly strong best picture candidates made the top 10/11, except for Little Women.
Eastwood, man. Never doubt him. Good news for Bates, after the SAG snafu.
So, The Two Popes is the too-much-Netflix victim, not Dolemite. This REALLY seemed Two Popes turf, so I'd say it's faded some from where it seemed at Telluride.
Jojo Rabbit breaks the recent Searchlight/NBR curse.
Joker's absence, despite the WB connection, suggests (as many of us thought all along) that the film as much beyond a Phoenix vehicle was a youthful blogger fantasy.
Most of the films I agonized over omitting from my predictions ended up making it in (Marriage Story, Jojo, Knives Out).
The Awards Worthy folk are already jumping every gun ("Oh my god, Brad is SWEEPING!"). I'd say this leaves it a wide=open race for the moment.
