I always find that I can best appreciate the awards year about six weeks after the Oscars when everything has settled down and it's been a while since I've seen all the contender, That way, the ones I've seen most recently don't affect my judgment either positively or negatively.

With that in mind, I've made a few changes to my year-end selections below, mostly coming back to my original takes on the top six categories.

Best Picture/Director

First Man remains for me, the film that made the strongest impression. A box-office flop mainly because the reactionaries had a fit over Chazelle not filming the planting of the American flag on the moon. Box-office should not be a factor in the granting of awards, so phooey on all those organizations that didn't even consider it.

With First Man out of Oscar consideration, my choice for the win became the unfairly maligned Green Book with BlackKklansman next in line. Ironically, I thought the best directed film of the year was the latter, even though its director was one of the leading voices against Green Book. I thought, and still think, that there is ample reason to appreciate both.

The Favourite and Roma round out my top five choices.

Best Actor

Ethan Hawke gave the year's best performance by an actor bar none in First Reformed. Rami Malek gave the year's most ingratiating performance in Bohemian Rhapsody, He was my clear choice among the Oscar nominees, but his performance lacks the gravitas of Hawke's career best work. With both in the race, Hawke prevails.

Next to Hawke, I thought the year's most overlooked actors were Ryan Gosling, whose minimalist acting style fit his character in First Man like a glove, and Lucas Hedges, who gave two finely etched performances in two less than perfect films, Boy Erased and Ben Is Back. Two of the screen's most popular stars of the last twenty years, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts, did some of their best work as his respective mothers in those films.

My fifth slot was a toss-up of Oscar nominees Viggo Mortensen and Willem Dafoe, with the former narrowly edging out the latter.

Best Actress

There were three brilliant contenders for Best Actress this year, and thankfully they were all nominated.

I liked the performances of Glenn Close, Melissa McCarthy and Olivia Colman very much. McCarthy was the most surprising and Colman the most fun, but I thought Close had the toughest job, turning in a complex performance in an underwritten film in which her character was neither lovable nor sympathetic, but understandable.

There were a number of also-rans in contention for my other two slots, but I finally settled on the criminally overlooked Emily Blunt whose no-nonsense Mary Poppins was no Julie Andrews but far from a wash-out, and Julia Roberts better than she's been since Erin Brockovich as teh fierce mother in Ben Is Back.

Best Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali and Richard E. Grant were the only two real choices here, with my vote going to Ali whose characterization was different from anything I had seen him in before, whereas Grant's portrayal was the culmination of everything else he done.

I'm not sure whether Timothée Chalamet's manipulative druggie in Beautiful Boy was contending in the right category, but that may be more attributable to his acting circles around Steve Carell than whichever one had more screen time. At any rate, he was campaigned in this one, so this is the one he landed in on my list.

Robert Forster is my candidate for the most egregiously overlooked and unsung non-nominee in any of the acting categories this year. His portrayal of Hilary Swank and Michael Shannon's father, and Blythe Danner's husband, in What They Had is what character acting is all about.

My last slot went to Adam Driver for BlackKklansman.

Best Supporting Actress

There were three strong contenders for me in Claire Foy in First Erased, Nicole Kidman in Boy Erased and Regina King in If Beale Street Could Talk, all playing supportive mothers. I gave my win to Kidman, whose character was the most nuanced. Whereas Foy and King's characters are loving mothers throughout their films, Kidman's is at first hateful, then understandable, and finally, both loving and lovable.

My other two nominees were Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz who I might well have considered in the Best Actress category over Blunt and Roberts, but then who would I nominate in their place in supporting? There really was no other choice for me.

I've updated my list having seen a number of 2018 films in recent weeks as well as revisiting The Favourite which is even better on its second viewing.

I really get anonymous' three-way tie for best actress - its so hard to seperate them as Colman/Stone/Weisz are virtually one in unison.

Yalitza Aparicio's nod has been viewed as an add-on to the spate of Oscar nods received by Roma. However, it's an important character - the selfless maid who is an integral part of the family - and one who is easily recognised as being part of many cultures across the world, historically from ancient times (the wet nurses) and even today.

Cuaron perfectly captures her and Aparicio nails the character through her heartbreaking performance.

In Hollywood the character of the "maid/companion" has unfortunately taken on the persona of either "Mary Poppins" or the teenage babysitter with raging hormones either fornicating on the couch while the kids sleep upstairs or being savagely murdered by a rampaging lunatic with or without a mask.

Cuaron brings this very real and unheralded character to vivid life in his memory piece.

Best Film:
1- First Man
But First Man's screenplay doesn't even get a mention?
It was a close runner-up. Part of the self-defeating nature of limiting the lists to five films is that, in a good year, some really good things get left off. Leaving it out wasn't meant as a knock on First Man's screenplay at all, which is very good, although I felt like the film was maybe less screenplay-dependent than the films I shortlisted in that category. I'm watching First Man again tonight, in a theater, so who knows, maybe I'll give it a bump into the lineup?
Claire Foy was robbed of a nod.
