I’m pretty sure A Star is Born ONLY submitted “Shallow.”

The Favourite in Makeup/Hairstyling is the only "whoa!" omission.

No sense trying to handicap that category till we saw what's inexplicably omitted in the final nominations. Though I suppose we can count on Border as the standard foreign-language candidate.

All the prominent documentaries made the cut, possibly setting up a clash of the titans. Unless they decide to default to the Mr. Rogers movie, whose widespread appeal eludes me.

I've seen five of the Visual Effects list, and expect I'll have to do Mary Poppins, as well. Then it's a matter of how many other films they make me undergo.

All the significant contenders for original score show up. That could be an interesting category.

Everything aside from Shallow on the song list is analogous to everything but Gravity on the Visual Effects list in 2013.

From what I've been reading, Girl would have been a Twitter war waiting to happen, so its omission from the foreign shortlist may be a blessing for the Academy. The list as is features far more prominent candidates than we usually see.

I just read (after reading the shortlists) that Disney expanded the categories they wanted Avengers: Infinity War to be considered in, since at first they submitted the film to be considered only for visual effects in order to not "sabotage" Black Panther's possibilities. So this explains A:IW presence in the Original Score shortlist.

Only one out of the three submitted songs from ASOB survived (the obvious one)... two from Mary Poppins Returns.

The possibility of having Kendrick Lamar up for best song is a great thing.

Colombia is still alive.

No Make up & Hairstyling for The Favorite... but Bohemian Rhapsody is in.

The Academy decided to release all their shortlists at once this year.

First headline (more to come): Burning is still alive for foreign film.
