Roma turning up here means its best picture campaign is on track.
First Man showing up here and in art direction, along with last night's win, suggests it might have a decent tech haul. The writers bailing on it probably means directing/writing nods are out of the question (barring an unexpected DGA citation), but it could sneak onto the best picture list a la War Horse with enough tech support.
The best picture win-campaign for Black Panther (which I've never believed in) hits a MAJOR snag. This is a place it should have hit if it was going all the way.
A lot of irony going around the past 24 hours. There's been this huge push to honor popular movies, but, by that, the powers that be meant the popular movies they designate as acceptable -- A Star is Born, Black Panther, maybe A Quiet Place. Instead, Bohemian Rhapsody (its box office marking it clearly popular) is the one bubbling up, and everyone's to the barricades.
Maybe it comes to this: of the popular movies, the Oscar community has had a long history of disdaining comic book movies (Panther), horror genre pieces (Quiet Place), and rom-coms (Crazy RIch Asians), and they're not so crazy about remakes (Star is Born). But biopics are their long-known weakness. So maybe Bohemian's run shouldn't surprise us. (Though the writers' omission suggests there's an upward limit to its potential -- and I can't imagine the DGA biting, either, give the mishegas around the director.)
