This one seems to have caught people off-guard. Granted, it's Anthony McCarten -- who, as Sabin has noted, has decoded the Academy formula for acting Oscars -- but reaction seems to be unexpectedly favorable for the film itself, not just the performances. Maybe having a more accomplished director attached has made some difference.
