The scene was phony as was much of the screenplay. It was Philomena's daughter who discovered the identity of her missing half-brother on the internet. The real story can be found here:

In my view, things have always looked grim for Robert Redford. He gave a borderline catatonic performance in a movie that bombed in a year with an overwhelming number of Best Actor options. The fact that some people still view him as a certain nominee is basically insane to me, even moreso now that both Her and The Wolf of Wall Street have emerged with such devoted fan bases.

And couldn't he have googled it in London?

God, let's hope not. He did nothing in that film to deserve a nomination. If anyone, Colin Farrell gave Banks' best male supporting performance.

I really want Joaquin Phoenix to crack into the Best Actor slate. Such unexpected and tender work from him. And, just like Amy Adams, a complete 180-turn from his The Master work last year.

I would love for Sally Hawkins to get a Best Supporting Actress nomination. I think her work is just fantastic in Blue Jasmine. She has the challenge of taking a woman who's supposed to be of limited intelligence and imbuing her with the kind of intuitive street smarts that her sister so clearly lacks. It's a slightly more savvy Stella Kowalski.

Wouldn't it be funny if Julia Roberts ended up being the only nomination from August: Osage County? Is even Oprah safe? Or does she have enough friends in the Academy to keep her afloat?

Big Magilla, no one is "underestimating" Philomena. It's a nice, quiet, harmless little film. But it's not some sort of transcendent experience. In fact, there's a lot that's simply off about it, including a lot of the Washington, D.C. sequence (that scene of Steve Coogan Googling the name of her son was kind of ridiculous, to be quite honest.) Of course, it was going to place well here with the Brits. Cate Blanchett's performance was simply better than Dench's and she'll win the gong in March.

I've been underestimating Captain Phillips' chances the way most have been underestimating Philomena's. Both are likely to make Oscar's list along with BAFTA's other three plus Dallas Buyers Club; Inside Llewyn Davis; Her; Nebraska and Saving Mr. Banks if ten - if nine, which one is left off the list is anyone's guess.

I've replaced Meryl Streep in my predictions for Best Actress with Adele Exarchopoulos rather than Amy Adams, but either is possible.

Matthew McConnaughey will most certainly replace Christian Bale among actors and Robert Redford, Joaquin Phoenix or Oscar Isaac could easily replace Leonardo DiCaprio.

Julia Roberts is the weakest of the supporting actress nominees with June Squibb likely to replace her.

Jared Leto in place of Matt Damon for sure; Tom Hanks in place of Bradley Cooper, maybe.

Best Director matches the DGA, but Oscar still has some wiggle room with The Coens and Spike Jonze ready to pounce, most likely over Scorsese.

Meryl Streep IS the weakest of the five - more so in the UK, of course, than in America, but even at the Oscars she could be the one who's left out - if they REALLY like American Hustle, I mean. The BAFTAs obviously loved it.

Best Actor is becoming more and more interesting. At least one of the five selected here will have to go because Matthew McConaughey will replace him. It should be Christian Bale. Someone else could replace either Di Caprio or (less probably) Hanks, It will all depend on how the Academy will react to Wolf of Wall Street, but a race composed of Dern-Ejofor-McConaughey-Di Caprio-Hanks doesn't seem impossible.

Supporting Actor is - after Best Actress - the most boring: Jared Leto in Matt Damon's place and you have the Academy line-up. (And by the way, having Damon, who is in every single scene of that Liberace movie, as Supporting is clearly absurd - thank God the Academy will spare us this).

In Supporting Actress, June Squibb will probably replace either Roberts or Hawkins. I hope Roberts, but then August Osage County will have at least one nominee from the Actors Branch.

I'm not so sure about the eligibility of Dallas Buyers Club and Her. BAFTA rules state:

"In order for a film to be considered for a BAFTA nomination its first public exhibition must be displayed in a cinema and it must have a UK theatrical release for no fewer than seven days of the calendar year that corresponds to the upcoming awards. A movie must be of feature length and movies from all countries are eligible in all categories, with the exception of Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut, British Short Film and British Short Animation which are for British films only."

This is somewhat confusing in that they nominate films that haven't yet opened in the U.K. but will have opened and played 7 days by the time of the actual awards. Neither Dallas Buyers Club and Her will have been exhibited in U.K. theatres until February.

I looked it up. Dallas Buyers Club and Her were both indeed eligible. I guess either not enough people saw it or they simply didn't like them across the pond.

Things are looking grim for Robert Redford.

quick thoughts:

- Biggest snub might be Michael Douglas in lead actor for Behind the Candelabra
- Leonardo di Caprio might have a shot for an oscar nomination
- It's looking very shacky for Meryl Streep
- Was Dallas Buyers Club eligeble?
- Very interesting set of foreign language film
