Remember that the moment that Ledger died, and the stories started coming out that he had put so much of himself into the Joker that it might have killed him, the performance became legendary. That was months before anyone had seen it. I think he would have been nominated anyways, but I think the comic book movie bias would have been a much stronger roadblock (remember Dark Knight got nowhere near the nomination haul people thought it would, and no comic book movie since has managed a major nomination) and it would have been a much harder battle. After all, voters would have had the excuse that he has many more chances ahead of him, so we don't have to give him an award for playing a comic villain.

The Original BJ wrote:I definitely think Gandolfini's performance merits attention; I think the fact that he passed away makes it more likely that the bigger awards groups might go for him, but if he's getting that boost, it's a boost that benefits worthy work.

I stand by my opinion that Heath Ledger still would have won the Oscar even had he not died. That was a pretty thin year for that category, and general consensus seemed to be that his performance was in a different league entirely from his competition.
Agree on both counts. Gandolfini would have got strong reviews anyway; what might be different if he hadn't died is, instead of being a potential nominee, he might be a case of "this is the kind of lovely performance the Oscars too often pass over". (Secondary question: would Enough Said be getting screenplay attention on the basis of "it's time Holofcener got some credit", or is it primarily the Gandolfini connection that's pushing her into contention?)

And Ledger was pretty head and shoulders above the rest of the supporting pack in '08. Though of course we can't conjure up an alternate universe where he didn't die, to test whether our nostalgia played any part in our rating performance so high.

I think he would have played into critics voting and the conversation, but probably not the industry awards.

But let's be honest, would Hearh Ledher have swept the board if he'd been alive ? Could he have even managed an Oscar nomination? I doubt it.

I think so, Flipp. It's a genuinely heartfelt performance, charming, effortless and definitive. I'm not the biggest Gandolfini fan, but I think he's very good in the film. Perhaps he wouldn't be considered as heavily, but I still think he would have been in the hunt.

Is Gandolfini's performance something that anyone would be talking about had he not passed away? I mean, let's be honest here. I haven't seen Enough Said.

Isn't James Gandolfini being promoted as a lead actor by the Hollywood Foreign Press? Wouldn't he be a contender for Best Actor in a Comedic or Musical Picture? I can't see this as being a smart move by any means as he's currently picking up traction as a supporting actor, but isn't that the case?

Also worth pointing out that this year provides perhaps the strongest field of Comedy candidates in recent memory -- American Hustle, August: Osage County, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, and The Wolf of Wall Street look like major Oscar-bait, to say nothing of a strong second tier of indie candidates that might pop up in the acting categories (Enough Said, Before Midnight, Frances Ha).

Of course, classifying some of these movies as "comedies" is interesting -- August: Osage County, despite having some laughs, strikes me as REALLY stretching it. But even Nebraska, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Before Midnight seem more like poignant dramas with humor rather than full-out comedies (though I guess Davis can count as a musical as well.) And though I haven't seen them, nothing in the American Hustle or Wolf of Wall Street trailers suggest those movies are anything to close to hysterical. In a way, you can almost understand why the folks behind well-received comedy hits like The Heat feel jilted by awards -- even when there is a specific category for comedies, dramas in drag get consideration first. (Not making any qualitative judgment on The Heat -- I haven't seen it -- but just pointing out that it very likely would have placed in some years, certainly the Alice in Wonderland/Burlesque/The Tourist slate of a couple years back.)

In Oscar terms, this pleasingly keeps the field muddied for longer, as the overflowing list of contenders (especially in the lead acting categories) are split somewhat evenly between the drama and comedy slates.

I also think Dench is going to be a real threat to Blanchett. She has been getting across the board raves.
