I'd actually argue both. I thought Gandolfini was pretty wonderful in Enough Said -- funny in ways we hadn't really seen from him before, unappealing enough that it's clear why he drove Keener crazy, but warm and tender in a manner that you get why Louis-Dreyfus falls unexpectedly for him anyway.

And yet, it's not really the kind of role that typically gets awards traction (in the kind of movie that generally doesn't get recognition beyond the Indie Spirits). So, any awards are perhaps a happy accident -- his untimely passing making him an appealing nominee, but for a performance (and career) well worth honoring.

I have to agree with BJ - Octavia Spencer is the standout in Fruitvale.

Also, I wonder how the six-actor race for Male Lead will affect things if at all.

Will Forte's category fraud may be the most egregious I've seen in years, but I am glad to see June Squibb gain steam. I'm hoping it will carry over into major awards traction.

And for anyone who has seen it, is Gandolfini award-worthy for the Holofcener feature or is it a belated "we miss you" type of nod?

This is my first year as a member of Film Independent, so I'll be voting on these awards. (So...if anyone wants to try to persuade me towards their favorites...I'm all ears...)

The Spirits have a strange way of recognizing movies in some areas but not others. It's bizarre to see Frances Ha on the Feature list without a nod for Greta Gerwig, Inside Llewyn Davis did well but missed for the Coens under screenplay and directing, and even down-ballot, the Editing category really passed on the Best Feature nominees (about the opposite of what happens with Oscar's category.)

The appeal of All is Lost continues to baffle me. I literally cannot fathom the idea that anyone could think that was a better movie than Before Midnight.

Interesting that Melonie Diaz got the Fruitvale Supporting Actress nomination instead of Octavia Spencer. Diaz was definitely strong, but Spencer has the big money scenes, and I thought she totally nailed them.

Will Forte is in nearly every scene of Nebraska. What kind of role is that NOT? Say it with me together, class...

As usual, weirdnesses. How is Frances Ha one of your best picture nominees without Greta Gerwig on the actress list? (She IS the movie) Also strange Llewyn Davis gets film but fails at screenplay.

But a good day for 12 Years and Nebraska; both pretty much maxed out. In fact, this might be the first time the Spirits helped perpetrate category fraud: Will Forte is very good, but supporting? My butt.
