Best Picture and Director 1999

Post by Big Magilla »

Oy, what a year. I agreed with just one of the nominees for Best Picture and one for Best Director.

My Best Picture choice was the winner, American Beauty narrowly over The Talented Mr. Ripley; The End of the Affair; Being John Malokovich and The Straight Story. My Best Director pick was Anthony Minghella for The Talented Mr. Ripley over Sam Mendes; Neil Jordan (The End of the Affair; David Lynch (The Straight Story and Pedro Almodovar (All About My Mother).

Of Oscar's other four Best Picture nominees, The Insider and The Sixth Sense placed seventh and eighth behind Magnolia , but I found The Green Mile disappointing and no merit at all in the highly anachronistic Cider House Rules.

My Votes go to the Oscar winners - American Beauty and its director, Sam Mendes.
