I had heard great things about this performance so I ordered the film from Amazon. While Bisset is good, it is a rather underwhelming performance. Certainly not worth mentioning on a top 5 list.
Bisset just wrapped up her season-long character arc as the leader of a kidney-stealing ring in Miami on Nip/Tuck last night. She was fantastic; one of the best things about this season. So calculatingly cruel yet sexually alluring. Rowr.

I didn't see About a Boy, but here would be my hypothetical Best Song shouldabeens:

New Order, "Here to Stay" (24 Hour Party People)
Q "The Kid" & Jermaine Dupri, "Been Away" (Drumline)
pick any given song from The Happiness of the Katakuris
??, the "mix tape" song (Hey, Happy!)
and, what the hell, Eminem, "Lose Yourself" (8 Mile)

Magilla, I salute you for managing to find five songs worthy enough for nomination even in years such as this - but did you even consider Badly Drawn Boy's quite wonderful Something to Talk About from the About a Boy soundtrack? I think its far better than any of the songs you've nominated - particularly that dreadful Madonna number from Die Another Day, which is almost as painful as the movie itself. In a soundtrack which complemented the film perfectly, I believe firmly Something to Talk About is one of the finest original movie numbers of the last twenty years or so.

I'm still upset that my VCR timer didn't trip for DV2 a few years back. Luckily (for me), I managed to watch about an hour of the film while it was airing, but was dismayed to discover that everything that aired after I left was not waiting on the tape for me later that evening.

Jacqueline Bissett in The Sleepy Time Gal was one of those performances that I looked for after I saw it on your lists.

Haven't seen Domestic Violence 2; The first one only aired on public television here in the States, and I wouldn't have been able to see that if Damien hadn't made me a copy. (My PBS station either didn't air it at all or I just missed it.)

dws1982, You have some great underrated choices there like Jacqueline Bissett and the trio from the sublime Last Orders.

I am curious to know if you have seen Domestic Violence 2? I very much admire Domestic Violence but I consider Part 2 up their with his very best films from the lates 60's early 70's.

Best Picture:
0) The Wire: Season One (David Simon) -- I'm not putting it in any other categories, but I want to acknowlege it here as the very best thing in film and TV that 2002 produced. 2002 had a lot of really good films, but for my money, this is the masterpiece. To those who don't like TV, don't worry, because this isn't a TV series in the conventional sense; It's more like a really great novel or maybe a thirteen hour long film. Not. To. Be. Missed.
1) Last Orders (Fred Schepisi) -- I'm not going to comment on everything, I promise. The next four or five movies are probably "better", but something about this one resonates more strongly with me, and that's why it gets the top spot.
2) Domestic Violence (Frederick Wiseman)
3) Femme Fatale (Brian DePalma)
4) The Pianist (Roman Polanski)
5) Talk To Her (Pedro Almodovar)

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Minority Report
Road to Perdition
Spirited Away

DIRECTOR
Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Rob Marshall, Chicago
Roman Polanski, The Pianist
Steven Spielberg, Catch Me If You Can
Steven Spielberg, Minority Report

[Jackson earned his second "Rings" nod in a row. Polanski enjoyed the only major nod for The Pianist. Spielberg competed against himself a year after winning for A.I.. But it was a year to honor a musical, Marshall's big screen version of Chicago.]

ACTOR
Michael Caine, The Quiet American
Leonardo DiCaprio, Catch Me If You Can
Tom Hanks, Road to Perdition
Jack Nicholson, About Schmidt
Al Pacino, Insomnia

[Pacino wins his first Criddic Award, after a previous nod for the documentary/theatrical showcase Looking for Richard, which won the 1996 Documentary prize. Caine was on his debut nomination. DiCaprio had won two, for supporting work in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993), and lead in Titanic (1997). Nicholson was enjoying a third nod, after 1992's double for Hoffa and a supporting role in A Few Good Men. Poor Tom Hanks. Six nominations since 1992 and no wins!]

ACTRESS
Jennifer Aniston, The Good Girl
Diane Lane, Unfaithful
Alison Lohman, White Oleander
Julianne Moore, Far From Heaven
Renee Zellweger, Chicago

[A nominee for 2000's Nurse Betty, Zellweger trumped past supporting nominee Moore (1997's Boogie Nights and 1999's A Map of the World). "Friends" star Aniston, Lane and Lohman were new.]

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Chris Cooper, Adaptation
Richard Gere, Chicago
Paul Newman, Road to Perdition
Dennis Quaid, Far From Heaven
Christopher Walken, Catch Me If You Can

[All first-time nominees, except Newman (a lead nominee for Nobody's Fool in 1994), Quaid beat Walken, Cooper and Gere.]

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Queen Latifah, Chicago
Samantha Morton, Minority Report
Michelle Pfieffer, White Oleander
Meryl Streep, Adaptation
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chicago

[Zeta-Jones outshined her co-star Latifah. Morton had been a supporting nominee for Sweet and Lowdown (1999). Pfieffer was nodded for 1989's The Fabulous Baker Boys and 1992's Love Field. Streep was actually on her fourth, after Best Actress cites for Postcards from the Edge (1990), The Bridges of Madison County (1995) and Marvin's Room (1996).]
