Magilla,

I watched Everything About Sex for the first time in over twenty years about 12 months ago and it hasn't dated very well, though Gene Wilder and Lou Jacobi still sparkle in their respective segments.

Never thought I'd see Finding Neverland next to Dogville on a top 10 list, but I'm all for enjoying a range of tastes, so cool, I guess. (Too bad Neverland had to be the one on top, though.)

I am quite pleased to see that these Oscar Shouldabeen threads have such a life. I am contemplating revising mine yet again to go by year of release in country of origin placing films in their proper hisotrical respective.

I am delighted whenever I find someone has listed among their top fives films, performances and/or directoral choices I either nominated or came close to nominating. Another example of great minds thinking alike. :D

I hesitate to comment on individual choices as they are quite personal. I prefer to stress the positive rather than the negative. For example, I prefer to comment on Damien's support of Gladys Cooper and Beulah Bondi rather than his support of Lipstick. :D

Precious, I thought some of your choices were brilliant, then there were others like The Chase, but I very much enjoyed the unconventionality including many of those Damien has already mentioned, though I must admit I have never seen Lou Jacobi in Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex, the one Woody Allen moive I have never been able to take more than a minute or two of.

A Time to Love and a Time to Die was available on VHS in the mid-80s in a horrible transfer. It's one of those titles Universal owns and has been stingy about releasing on DVD along with such other gems as The Tarnished Angels, This Earth Is Mine, This Happy Feeling, Tammy and the Bachelor, Make Way for Tomorrow, Ruggles of Red Gap and so many others.

Thanks for your comments Damien. I always enjoy reading your comments.

I was lucky enough to see A Time to Live and a Time to Die at a Douglas Sirk retrospective that toured Australia in 1999. I can’t remember where the print came from but I suspect the UCLA. The quality of the print was also quite good. It was also a great opportunity to see Scandal in Paris and some of Sirk’s German films from the 1930s (a very mixed bunch).

Interestingly Written in the Wind has just released on DVD in the UK and Australia a few weeks ago. I believe the print is stunning. With any luck this will be the first of more Sirk films to find their way to DVD releases. It’s a shame that Criterion appears to have stopped with Written in the Wind & All That Heaven Allows.

This is awful to say but I can’t recall Louis Calhern in The Asphalt Jungle. Wish I had room for his great lead performance in The Magnificent Yankee. It’s over 10 years since I saw the film, which I liked, and Sam Jaffe is the one who has made the lasting impression on me. I only compiled my pre 1977 lists a few years ago and make adjustments as I see my films. I intend to view most of the films on my lists again over the next couple of years along with films though not listed that I like immensely (Auntie Mamie, Hepburn/Tracey comedies/His Girl Friday etc).

Ironically The Asphalt Jungle is part of the Warners film noir box set that I intend to buy in the coming months so I’ll get the opportunity to see the film again too.

Funny you mentioning some of my choices that you don’t care for because when I was placing my lists on the board last week and I got to 2000 there was Joel Schumacher’s name in the top five directors of the year and I thought “What the ….!”. Mind you I think he deserves his place on my list but it’s still a shock seeing his name on my list because I think the guy is a hack. Just goes to prove that sometimes even hacks can surprise me.

Precious, it’s been great fun reading your barrage of 70 years of Oscar shoulda beens. It’s especially rewarding to see such deserving but unexpected honorees mentioned as Ann Sheridan and the criminally underrated Pat O’Brien in Angels With Dirty Faces, Fay Helm for The Phantom Lady, the wonderful Henry Daniell , early Ozu and Mizigouchi, praise for Boy With Green Hair, Peter Miles in The Red Pony, Joan Crawford in her Pirandellian Harriet Craig, Richard Davalos, Gaby Rodgers in Kiss Me Deadly, James Mason in Bigger Than Life, Mamie Van Doren for Girl’s Town, Charmian Carr for The Sound of Music. Lou Jacobi for Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (the thought of him adjusting his dress has cracked me up for 30 years). And I can’t wait to see Kind Lady!

Your citing of various performers in Sirk movies was especially gratifying, particularly such little-known works as Has Anyone Seen My Gal and the great A Time To Live And A Time to Die (how’d you see the latter? I saw it in film class in1976, but haven’t heard of it being shown since then) And I love that you love Salt Of The Earth. Your Best Director line-up for 1959 is amazing – that was a great year, wasn’t it?

Even when I disagree with you – Robert Z. Leonard for Best Director?, Ty Power in Son of Fury, the insane Fountainhead, The Children’s Hour, Sidney Lumet the same year as Bunuel and Bresson? William Hurt in The Doctor ? And where’s Auntie Mame? – your choices are so wonderfully personal and idiosyncratic that one has to be filled with admiration.

One question, though. I’ve been concentrating on movies from the early 50s lately, ad as a consequence Louis Calhern has moved into my pantheon of great character actors (right there with S.Z. “Cuddles” Sakall, Henry Travers, Jerome Cowan and Clinton Sundberg). I think his greatest performance is in The Asphalt Jungle, yet you have him for his amiable turn as Buffalo Bill in Annie Get Your Gun – any specific reason? (And also no citation for Executive Suite, in a year when you mention Tab Hunter?).

Okri, I think McAdams was much better playing a nasty character in Mean Girls than she was at sweetness in The Notebook. Still, I don't think she was anything special in this stock kind of role -- Mandy Moore in Saved, for instance, had a lot more nuance, and it was Amanda Seyfried -- the ditzy girl who, explaining that she was psychic, said, "I think I have ESPN" -- who stole Mean Girls.

Damien, did watching Mean Girls give you a better opinion of Rachel McAdams?
