Re: Categories One-by-One: Documentary Feature
Crip Camp is very much a classic, conventional documentary that tackle social justice issues and is pretty inspirational plus it comes from the Obamas' production company so that gives it a good pedigree. I think if anything will spoil the two front-runners, this one might be it. Unless they want t...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2020
Wolfwalkers was really enjoyable. I would have loved to see this on the big screen. Not really a whole lot to say about it, though. It feels more kiddie than Cartoon Saloon's previous films, so it's thematically rote in the way kid's movies can be. But it's just so gorgeous to watch (and to listen ...

Re: 2020 Oscar Nomiantions
I knew I should have put "Love & Monsters" in my actual predictions for visual effects over "Birds of Prey"! While I'm disappointed that "The Personal History of David Copperfield," a really charming movie, got nothing -- but "Pinocchio" is agood surprise ...

Of course that's if voting rights aren't totally stripped away by then in some states.Sabin wrote:
All we have to do is defend our six seats, which is a scary prospect. But we have mail-in ballots and a newly-winning get out the vote strategy.

Re: BAFTA stuff.
The thing I like about this year's Oscar race is literally I have less of an idea what is going to be nominated in many categories than any race since before I started coming to this board. Good. I'm old. I could use the surprises. I think it's absolutely marvelous that BAFTA threw everyone off the...

Reza wrote I think you may be underestimating Boseman's performance in the Spike Lee film. I have a feeling he will win for this performance and not for Ma Rainey where he has very strong competition from both Hopkins and Riz Ahmed. We’ll see. I think Daniel Kaluuya in Judas... might be stronger co...

Re: My first Oscar predictions!
I would point two things out: Hopkins has never won at SAG, which has been mentioned elsewhere. That feels more like trivia than an injustice to be corrected. (The SAG awards did not exist when Silence of the Lambs swept the Academy Awards.) Does “SAG history” really weigh on voters’ minds? Good po...

Re: My first Oscar predictions!
Normally I'm the one saying, let's not lock anything in yet. But I think Boseman is a lock, not just a front-runner. If there was going to be an alternative choice, it likely would have started with the Globes. I certainly don't expect the Broadcasters to do anything but jump on the bandwagon -- pr...

Re: Best Supporting Actress 2019
I wasn't terribly thrilled with this category. I loved Johansson and Pugh. I would replace Bates, Robbie and Dern with Thomasin McKenzie, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Jennifer Lopez, who surprised me with her performance after years of unevenness and even outright dreck. It reminded me of the work she d...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2019
I was happy to see Pitt win after years of proving himself as a solid actor. Pesci and Pacino are both great in The Irishman , but it's so hard to choose between them. I was also happy to see Hanks nominated after several near-misses. I enjoyed Hopkins, too, but I would replace him with Jonathan Maj...

Loved the work of Zellweger, Ronan and Johansson.
Would replace Erivo and Theron with Lupita N'Yongo and Jessie Buckley,
who should have been in the conversation for Wild Rose.

Adam Driver was an emotional powerhouse in Marriage Story. Banderas was terrific, too.
I enjoyed DiCaprio's performance, but I would replace Phoenix and Pryce with Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy.
