That feels more like trivia than an injustice to be corrected. (The SAG awards did not exist when Silence of the Lambs swept the Academy Awards.) Does “SAG history” really weigh on voters’ minds?

The Mauritanian can be rented in the U.S. as of today.

Re: Overall Globes Takes

The previous repeat winner, Christopher Waltz, was a sole winner in 2009 and his film also won Best Original Screenplay in 2012. The Father is definitely on the bubble as a Best Picture contender. But... y'know, so was Django Unchained. Waltz was in Tarantino movies that were box-office hits. I hav...

Re: Overall Globes Takes

The last rapid repeat winner, Mahershala Ali, won for best picture winners both times. The Father still feels like a paper contender. I can’t see Colman winning again for it. Hillbilly Elegy is not a movie that people win Oscars for, but no one is under the illusion that Glenn Close is winning for a...

It barely appeared in the Netflix top 10 and quickly vanished. I’ve seen no indication that it has any kind of fan base.

Re: Hillbilly Elegy

Let’s just give it to her for this so we can know that all it took for her to win was her worst script, her worst director, her worst film, her worst co-stars, 12 lbs of hag makeup, and a non-existent field (Girl from Borat! Grandma from Minari! Mean Girl from Mank!) and finally! Glenn Close will g...

Re: SAG Nominations

It almost certainly will be either Ahmed or Boseman. I'm thinking Ahmed has a slight edge if Boseman has a real shot at winning in support. Boseman seems to have best actor sewn up (and I can see SBC winning supporting as recognition for both Chicago 7 and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm). Ahmed and Lin...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Supporting Actress

a) Jojo Rabbit is the lowest grossing, non-Netflix best picture nominee. Calling it populist is designed to minimize it's mixed reviews, in my mind. Has it even made enough to qualify as "populist"? $28M after 16 weeks is not impressive. It's one of the lowest grossing TIFF People's Choic...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Adapted Screenplay

I'm changing the channel after getting to see Brad Pitt win and deliver his latest stand-up set, which should be early in the broadcast.

Unless I receive a text telling me otherwise, I'll go to bed very, very sad that Greta Gerwig lost. That's my prediction.

Re: First Winner Predictions

1917 will win best picture. As long as best foreign/international film exists as a consolation prize, I can't see a foreign-language film winning best picture. Bong could very likely win best director, however. (Basically, a Roma repeat.) Fairly or unfairly, I think many look at 1917 as Roger Deakin...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Score

I remain consistently baffled by this weird thing you have about what entitles people to Academy Awards based on career-standing, especially considering that *nobody* would be voting for Hildur Guðnadóttir because of her Chernobyl work while substantially more people would be voting for Thomas Newm...

Re: 1917 reviews

The Hollywood Reporter review below starts out talking about the actor's teeth, which I thought was ridiculous. People pointed out this same 'goof' about Downton Abbey for years, thinking they were clever. You're not going to find many professional actors with bad teeth, and most audiences don't wa...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Score

Guðnadóttir's score has been pretty widely acclaimed, even by those who weren't fans of the movie. If Joker wins here, I'll be truly baffled. Like, do-my-ears-work-different, what-if-I'm-also-colorblind baffled. It's just cacophonous, jarring strings to make it extra-super-crystal-clear that he's n...

Re: Judy reviews

The question for me is why are you so snarky about Renee Zellweger and Jennifer Lopez having career comebacks or how they're not worth taking seriously. The answer is pretty simple. You don't think they're good enough actors. They don't fit your definition of what a serious actor is. Way to infer a...
