Re: R.I.P. Toby Keith
At times it seemed like the right-wing provocateur thing was at least something of an act. He had spent about ten years in kind of a long line of interchangeable guys who sang about the stereotypical country song topics. He had some hits, but never really broke into the big time. His career began le...

Re: R.I.P. Don Murray
I know how billing worked in the 50's, and even how it works today. Category fraud is a term commonly used to describe an acting performance nominated in the wrong category, and Murray's lead performance in a supporting category qualifies under that definition.

Re: R.I.P. Don Murray
His nomination is one of the early category fraud cases that doesn't really get mentioned, probably because a lot of people haven't seen Bus Stop . Also, unfortunately, the movie is not that good, and he is not that good in it. A lot of his movies are pretty obscure, but I do remember liking him (al...

Re: Best Cinematography 1977
I can't vote this year on account of integrity -- I've never seen (or had much desire to see) Islands in the Stream, and I haven't been able to track it down in time. I figure the title tells me why it was nominated. Just watched this. It doesn't change my vote, which would be for Close Encounters ...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
-Best Visual Effects is a head-scratcher. I'm leaning towards The Creator but I'm not sure if voters will actually watch any of these films. I'm kind of leaning towards Godzilla Minus One because its success has been a good story, but in the absence of Best Picture nominees, they have often gone wi...

Re: Nominations Announcement
- Sad for the unenthusiastic journey KOTFM is going through, probably my favorite film of the year. I am glad for both DeNiro and Gladstone but no screenplay (and to some extent, no DiCaprio) means the film is officially now an afterthought in the race. I fear this is going to be the third Scorsese...

Re: R.I.P. Herman Raucher
I like Summer of '42 , although most of what I like about it is the atmosphere that Mulligan, Surtees, and Michael Legrand's music create. I don't know that Raucher's screenplay is high on its list of virtues. Based on his filmography, he seemed to have a pretty specific lane of doomed/impossible ro...

Re: 2023 Emmy Awards
Alexander and Carrel (and Hugh Laurie in Drama) lost because of the tape era, where a small pool of voters watched submitted episodes in a given category, and their characters were often too abrasive to win in that type of voting format. Especially when writers like David E. Kelley (in Drama) and ot...

Re: 2023 Emmy Awards
I think that shows are automatically considered Comedy if episodes are around 30 minutes, and Drama if they are around an hour, and shows have to appeal to the Academy to be considered in the other category. At least The Bear spared us another Ted Lasso sweep*. And glad that Ebon Moss-Bachrach won, ...

Re: 2023 Emmy Awards
Since The Bear season 2 dropped during early pre-strike Emmy balloting, and since it just won Golden Globes for season 2, it's a little whiplash-inducing to see it winning Emmys for season 1, which released over 18 months ago, and you almost wonder if some voters may have thought they were voting fo...

Re: Minor Critics Groups Winners
This is a dumb vote. That movie aims pretty low but it accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do.

Re: SAG Nominations
May December has some particularly barbed attacks on actors, so I understand SAG not responding positively to this. I do think Melton probably still has a shot, but I wouldn't put money on it.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023
All I can think of is a lot of people didn't like Richard Jewell (I think that movie has problems but is also misunderstood) and maybe they got tired of her spending the better part of a decade in increasingly-unwatchable Ryan Murphy shows.
