Re: R.I.P. Chita Rivera

Talk about a legend! I saw her perform a cabaret act in a small San Francisco club about 7 years ago. We sat in the front row. She was amazing: one of those veteran performers who could put on a great show in her sleep. Her legs still looked great in her 80s. I was in heaven.

A great one.

Re: I'm finally going (back) to the U.S.

Yes, congrats on getting the visa. I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for most of my adult life. Currently I live a couple of hours east in the Sierra foothills, but come to SF at least a couple of times per month (partly to see films which don’t show on my area). I will likely be traveling ...

There’s an expression: Looking good is the best revenge.

80+ million dollars is effective, too.

That’s a lot to be carrying, Uri. I appreciate you sharing all that. My condolences on the loss of your father (I lost mine in 2020), and for everything that has happened in Israel. Sending you virtual hugs.

Re: Evaluating the nominees

I hope the dreadful part of 2023 was more global than personal for you, Uri. We are all too aware of the global part, which of course can have a big impact personally.

As to the movies, I’m curious whether there are other films and/or performances from 2023 that you would assign an A or B grade.

Re: I'm always here for the Trivia

Just realized something: this is Christine Vachon's first Oscar nomination as the producer of Past Lives. Kind of crazy it took this long. That’s because she’s been attached to indie films that have heretofore not been Academy-friendly in their queerness and/or oddness, e.g., the films of the Todds...

Congratulations to Sterling K. Brown for breaking the seemingly impossible task of breaking through for a younger actor
Brown is 47, a few years older than Ryan Gosling.

Re: R.I.P. Norman Jewison

He directed (and produced) a lot of prominent films over a couple of decades. His apex was early with In the Heat of the Night, still very watchable almost 6 decades later. He had some pretty good, entertaining films (like Fiddler and Moonstruck) and some lousy/corny ones, like The Hurricane. He was...

Re: Let's Talk Best Supporting Actress

As I've got more and more contenders under my belt, the less certain I am Blunt deserves a nomination. Don't get me wrong: have loved the lady since Devil Wears Prada, and would hate to see her disappointed. But Foy, Cruz, Moore, Pike, maybe even Viola Davis have stronger roles, and are clearly beh...

Re: USC Scripter Nominations

I wonder if Origin gets extra credit for somehow adapting an “unadaptable” academic text into a cohesive narrative, creatively turning the book’s author into a character in the film. I’m very curious to see it. It’s mostly been positively received though with some clear detractors. As for All of Us ...

Re: Art Directors Guild Nominees

Interesting that this guild designated Poor Things as “fantasy” while the Set Decorators and Costumes guilds designated it as “period.” In my mind the Art Directors got it right. Though Poor Things certainly looks period-y it isn’t true to any particular period. It’s whimsical and really pure fantasy.

I’m just wondering which cast members will be included and which excluded for Oppenheimer. There are so many actors that had a significant impact in that film, even with small parts.

Re: Globes Post-Mortem

I didn’t think to tune into it until about two hours from the start. I didn’t intend to watch it at all, but just check in on who was winning. I discovered that on Variety’s website they had a live feed of the broadcast without the commercials. It just showed people mingling in the audience during t...
